2012 Super 8 150 and first service...

Ok guys, I'm just about to hit the 200 mile mark on my new SUper 8 150.  The dealership where I bought it wants $200 to perform the first service.  Being mechanically sound, I can change the oil and perform most general maintance required.  My question is what will the dealership do for this first service that I may or may not be able to do myself?  I assume they will reset the carb, check and reset the valve lash and change the oil.  The only complaint I've had in the first 150 miles is the scooter seems a little sluggish and I have about a 1/4" of play in the throttle.  I don't mind spending the money f its's really worth it, but hate paying someone $200 to do somthing I could do for $50.00 myself.

Do it yourself Jrmay... All new scoots are sluggish when new... You will find the difference in performance after several services...  You can change the oil, adjust the carb and valve clearance, change the spark plug (if you want), clean the air filter, I also have the throttle play...   In addition, clean the CVT... you will see lots of rubber belt dust in there because of the belt's breaking-in.  Still use mineral oil because your scoot is still very new, you can use synthetic maybe on your next change.

  go ahead and do a oil change and change it hot ,. when you have 600km. have your dealer do a oil change, for the warrenty,. and change the tranny oil too,. also change it hot ,. before the crap has time to settle ,. do not put to much tranny oil in ,  or you will have oil blow into the air filter ,. if your scoot is the same design as mine,.

So what oil do you recommend I change it with?  I've yet to get it over 45 mph and want to make sure the whole break in process is done correctly.

 use regular oil for first 600 miles , then you can use syn. oil,.  the tranny can take syn. oil any time,. open her up for short runs to help set the rings ,.if you read mototune usa  thats how I rode my scoot ,. he said the first 20 miles is the most important to set the rings on compression and decompression,. on decompression I used a steep hill about 1 mile long,. top of hill 60 to 70 miles a hour and close the throttle all the way down,. then a easy run to turn around and WOT up the hill,.I did that about 10 times,.

  PS   I went home and changed the oil at 25 miles, changed it hot !!!

de dee is right, use regular oil.  To add, use scooter specific oil with a JASO MB rating... this is a low friction oil compared to your regular motorcycle oil... As to viscosity... the manufacturer usually recommends 15W-40 but it really depends on where you are situated... cold countries will require a low viscosity oil like 5w-xx or 10w-xx and hotter climates may require 20w-40 or 20w-50 viscosity oil.  I use a high detergent 15w-40 Delo Gold Diesel oil...

Just to clarify, can I use regualr automotive motor oil, or motorcycle/scooter specific oil?  I currently have a Duramax Diesel, and always have plenty of Rotella 15w-40 around the house.  Was planning on changing it tomorrow (with Rotella) but need clarification before doing so.

On the dot! Rotella is perfect! I would have used Rotella if its available here but it's not. That's why I use Caltex Delo Gold. Been using it for 2 years now.  Now, you don't have to buy a separate oil for you scoot. Automotive (gasoline) oil is ok, but diesel oil has a higher detergent content, thus, is ideal for our hard beating small scooter engine. 

To further clarify, most motorcycles are wet clutch and the oil in the engine is the same oil in the tranny so the oil used are formulated not to be very slippery (JASO MA).  While scooters have a separate engine and gear oil, scooter specific oils are more "low friction" or more slippery.

I know for me, Rotella 15W40 makes it hard to crank in cool mornings in my Bet and Win 250 because it is a bit too thick when cold, so I would use 5W40 to get the oil flowing and lubricating the engine earlier. I like automotive synthetics.

But it might be nice and warm where you live, so the 15Wxx is less of a problem.

Thanks for all the replies.  For the next several months, the weather here in Missouri should be in the 70ies or above, so the velocity shouldn't cause too much of an issue.

Yes, cold weather = low viscosity oil.
