Check to see if you don't have a crack in the pipe.  Mine occurred near the bolt that held the heat shield on.

Yes, to check, you can plug/cover the pipe while the engine is running and try to listen for a exhaust leak.  An improper air/fuel mixture can also cause backfires.    Also, the louder noise occurs when the filling inside your muffler is already burned.

Sounds like your header pipe is loose? Lay down beside bike, reach under with correct size ratchet wrench and tighten the 2 long nuts where the head and exhaust pipe bolt together. Very easy. If still loud, get new crush gasket. Very easy to do. If this is not the problem, then your bike is running lean. Mine does to. This is why it back fires on de-sell. If fuel injected, take to dealer after doing above if this does not work. Also, check for other exhaust leaks like clamps and such. Make sure they are tight and no exhaust gas is getting out or around them. :-*
