Down in Key West right now: Scooter capital of the USA?
« on: April 25, 2013, 08:21:38 PM »
It might just be. I've been down since Saturday & we are here for 2 weeks & the crazy amount of scooters that are down here. I've been down countless times, but this is my 1st renting a scooter. I decided to use "Moped Hospital" on Truman Ave. The rental rates down here vary. He gave me an old banged-up People S50 here:

http://www.kymcousa.com/showroom/scooters/peopleS50/index.html

I have no idea how many miles are on her (I bet 20K) easy, because the speedometer doesn't work. She looks like it's been in WWIII. The plastics are so faded, dings, cracks & nicks galore & not to mention she is terribly slow. Why did I pick her? Price! He offered me the scooter for 7 days for $115.00! I'm going to rent the new Yamaha 50F Zuma on Saturday. It has a whopping 3HP, but's it's fuel-injected & water-cooled. It's one bad-ass looking scooter, aside from the twin (bug eyes) headlights.

Here is the top five scooters I have seen so far. BTW..98% of the scooters down here are all 50cc (max speed limit in Key West is 35MPH)

1. Yamaha Zuma (The Zuma is KING down here)
2. TGB Key West (Zuma knock-off)
3. Tao-Tao ATM50 (Chinese crap)
4. Kymco Agility 50
5. Hyosung Sense

Others I have seen tons of Kymco's The Super 8 just missed the #5 slot by a hair. Adly, CPI Oliver City, Aprilla, Vespa, Honda (not as many as I thought), Daelim, PCC & Znen & Lance. I'm sure there are @ least 6-7 more manufactures. My memory is shot @ this stage. Funny, not one Piaggio or SYM! Not one ! I was stunned!

Having a blast down here! Great loaded every night & enjoying the KW atmosphere. Thought I would pass it along! BTW...I went to the local Yamaha dealer & OTD price for the Zuma 50F is $3160.00 including tax, plates & all other fees. Not to bad if you ask me. Not as soild as a Kymco Agility 50 price wise, but better then the Super 8 50 IMHO.

Key West is the perfect spot for scooters, small island, far from any big city, warm weather and low speed limits. Enjoy and make sure you take in the sunset varyity show done by the locals at the west end of Duval st.

Same State but as the crow flys its a few hundred miles, Key West is the most southern point of the Continental US, 90 miles north of Cuba, it's where most Cuban float to when coming over. It's a small but great party town, with nice hotels, bars, and such, Duval st. is about 13 blocks long (I may be wrong about that) and they have the Duval crawl where you stop at a bar for a drink on every block, if you can make it.

One bit of information is there are no natural beaches on the island, all the sand beaches they have were trucked or pumped in. (from what I've read.)
