Melted Wire Replacement
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:03:46 AM »
Hi. So I recently fixed my water pump and after riding my 2007 super 9 for a while something started short-circuiting. The wire that encases the wires that go to the headlight and RPM tac must've fallen off the hook and melted against the exhaust. When I lift the wire up so there is no contact and start the scooter everything works fine, the tac shows the correct RPMs and the headlight works. When looking at the wire I can see some exposed copper (maybe 3 threads) but like I said everything seems to be working.

So my question is this: Can I easily replace the wire myself without having to dish out the big bucks, or do I have to have a professional do it to the expense of my wallet? Alternatively, how dangerous would it be to wrap it in electrical tape and hook/tape it to the hook to make sure it stays in place? Am I an idiot for even considering this?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you can see the wiring where the insulation is melted, why not wrap the individual wires with electrical tape ?
Then wrap the entire wire bundle with another layer of electrical tape.
That should suffice unless there are structural problems with the wires (broken wires).

Check the auto parts dept. at Wal Mart.  They also have spray insulation and the liquid that you daub on (messy).

But Scotch electrical tape is good enough.

scoot safely,

There's a couple individual copper threads that seem damaged but the wire still holds together. I'll separate all the wires and re-wrap them individually with electrical tape and check how it runs after that, if it does I'll then wrap them all together into one bundle again.. I'm pretty sure it will be fine because like I said, it still runs fine as long as it's not sitting against the exhaust. I'll let you know what comes of it tomorrow. Thanks.

Sounds like a good approach.
No need to fix what isn't broken.

Just a final update. Wrapped it all up. Everything seems to be working fine. Took it for a quick ride and had no troubles at all. Put a few layers of tape on, just to unsure water-proofness.
