Found this good picture of the position needed (at top dead center) for the cam sprocket when you're going to check your valve lash.
The 3 holes should line up like this when viewed from the side.
If you don't get any movement on the arms above the valve ends - check to see if you are indeed at top dead center. You should find some movement there - so maybe you need to rotate another 360 clockwise .
No gap can mean you have valves that are not completely closing, which can lead to loss of compression (lowered power) and worse - burned valve edges during ignition.
A bit too large a gap gets noisy - but not as scary to your engine.
