Dumb LIKE rider.
« on: July 19, 2013, 10:20:21 PM »
Sitting here looking at my wet riding jacket - thinking the best way to dry it is to go riding. Rain has stopped, and it'sa lovely heat index of 100+.
Scooter won't start.
Flooded?
Wet electrics?
Squirted some WD40 around, then spent 20 mins cleaning up THAT mess.
Scooter won't start.
Kill switch is OFF.
Turn on kill switch scooter fires angrily (at me).
Never use the kill switch, so must have done that when I was rolling it back into the garage. (later....oh, yeah, I used that big towel to dry it off after I got home. Bumped the kill switch off.)
Sorry Kymco, you deserve better riders.
Now that I've done my confession - I'm going riding!
Ride safe folks!

I've got one that can top that Stig. When my scooter was delivered I'm helping the guy back it off the truck. I look down at the fuel guage and think "oh cool, they're giving me a full tank of gas". I proceeded to ride it around the neighborhood the next two days. I venture further out on the third. I'm coming up to a red traffic signal at about 20 mph and the scooter dies. I push it over by the side of the road. Looking for any obvious trouble I find nothing wrong. Restart attempts fail, so I call the shop where I bought my Like. The guy asks me "are you sure you've got gas?" I'm telling him yes while looking at the fuel gauge, then I notice that our gas guage is backwards to most everyone else.
As punishment I had to push my scoot a mile to the next gas station.

lol... great stories guys. Stig, I've done the same thing before. I've even done it with the kick stand down. I walk around the scooter thinking, "what the hell, man? The scooter just crapped the bed?!" I called my wife and asked her to come and pick me up. Then the light bulb comes on lmao... I called her to cancel the pickup, but I told her there was a loose wire so I didn't feel like more of an idiot than I already did.   ;D

Thats funny, I had the kill switch derp on my first day. When I figured it out I switched it then forgot to hold the brake in...was in the parking lot for nearly 5 minutes before I remembered every condition. Its funny to think about it now after a hundred or so starts and stops.

Since then I always use the kill switch to end the ride, then turn key off.

Now every start up is a ritual of: turn key on - flick kill switch - hold brake - press start.

Making myself do every step ensures I never miss one again!
I Like you.  Do you Like me?

Passed.....,
That reminds me, I should look into why my LIKE starts with the kick stand down. It's not supposed to, is it? Would be only the second fault I've found --- the brake fluid was low (apparently delivered that way - since topping the level hasn't budged) & this kick stand lock out not working.

My Like starts with the kick stand down too.  The owners manual says that it's not supposed to, but that must be a misprint.  There is no switch on the kick stand.  One less thing that can go wrong imho.  Funny stories.,  My son couldn't get my Like going a while back.  He had to walk home... Kill switch off.  He must have bumped it or something because I never use it.  I think it would drain the battery if you leave the key on.  It did on my Riva and left me walking once when someone else shut down with the kill switch instead of the key.  Come to think of it..That was my son too!

I don't see a safety switch connected to the side stand to prevent startups. I believe in certain countries the safety feature is a requirement.

The kill switch wasn't meant to be a means for turning off the engine other than for emergencies. To keep the contacts of the switch from failing, occasionally cycle through the on/off position to keep the contacts clean.

When I bought my GV and got it home I put it on the side stand, went out the next morning to start it and it wouldn't start. Finally wore the battery down and had to put it on the charger. Then when I went to start it I put side stand back up and it fired right up, so I figured it must be a weak battery. Next morning I did the same thing, ran battery down and had to charge it again. This time I didn't put side stand up and same failure. Almost gave up and for some reason put side stand up and it fired right up. the light bulb finally went off and I have had no issues since.
One question, my GV will start with the center stand down. Is this normal? Just won't starat with the side stand down.

Yes, starting with center stand down is normal ---- it's the side stand down / starting  that seems to vary in Kymco scooters. Frankly, a lock-out to prevent starting a twist-and-go scooter with the side stand down makes sense to me -- you'd better not goose the throttle while starting with that stand down or it will take off down the street without you! This is not an issue with it up on the center stand (back wheel is off the ground)

or making a left turn with the side stand down. Yikes! That's something I often do as I'm taking off for a ride, look down to make sure I didn't forget to fold it up. I don't even know if I've got a kill switch on that. I'll find out today when I check.
