How often cleaning the oil screen?
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:42:27 AM »
My second oil change at 1199km. This time after draining the oil, also accessed to the oil screen. The screen was pretty clean. Have a couple questions related to this.

1. How often does the screen needs to be clean?

2. Anybody change oil via the oil screen plug only? (i.e. if you have to clean the screen every time).

Thanks.

I did on Agility, approx. 60 % of old oil comes out that way.
Use the drain plug to drain out old oil, not the filter plug...

Service manual says at 4000k and 8000k - so every 4000k (2484 miles)  Not sure what good cleaning that screen does - I swear you could throw a cat though the holes in it - it does drain another third of a cup of oil out there - so that may be enough reason right there as it holds less than a quart.

Maybe it will stop loose bolts. :)

Ok - now I am getting confused - the owners manual says to clean at 300k, 3000k, 7000k and 11000k - why it is different than service manual confuses me - the service manual is 2006 maybe it has been revised.

If you clean it everytime you change oil (2) things will happen-you get more dirty oil out, and if a problem is starting to occur (large pieces of metal in screen), maybe the problem can be caught before a more expensive (lock-up) happens. Honda used to do this same practice on engines. They did it to keep larger pieces of metal out of bearings, oil pump, etc. because some metal flashing can come loose from engine castings. Its too bad they didn't incorporate an oil filter instead-but there are lots of old hondas still running that had this set-up...
