It's official, I'm legal!
« on: July 22, 2013, 03:13:12 AM »
Well, I just passed my motorcycle safety course. I SUCKED!!!! But at least I passed. I am now legal to ride a motorcycle. I will never under any circumstances EVER ride a motorcycle again, but I am legal to ride one. I may be the only person who has taken the class who HATED riding that stupid motorcycle. I have never liked having to shift anything. I had a Nissan pick up with a 5 speed for 15 years and I hated driving that thing. This is why I am buying a scooter and not a motorcycle. I loved the parts in the class where we got up to speed and did not have to shift so I'm really looking forward to riding my scooter. You have no idea how happy I am that the class is over.
I do STRONGLY recommend the class to anyone who has not taken it. It will teach you things that are absolutely indispensable if your on 2 wheels. Don't say to yourself you will get to it whenever just go do it. You will be very glad you did.
Well, mabe next weekend I will be a very happy Like 200i owner.

      Be safe, mscmkr

Congratulations on your test. Unlike you, I have driven a stick shift in a car all my life and I rather enjoy it. I think you have more control especially in slippery conditions as you can gear down faster. For a two wheeled vehicle though I like the automatic feature. Less to think about when you have to look out for the idiots out to get you.

Can you let us know what the class taught you that indispensable?  I have not taken the class but was a rider many years ago.  I'm now getting back into it on a scooter.

I will take my test on Thursday after having let my license go many years ago.  I could kick myself for that mistake.

Also, you will love driving the automatic scooter.  I am having so much fun and it is much easier than riding a motorcycle that you need to shift.

Ironically, I drive a five speed VW and can't imagine not driving a shift car.  It is second nature.  However, when I started riding again, I found that shifting was more than I wanted to do and went automatic with the scooter.

Have fun and congrats!

More than anything it teaches you how to think in traffic situations.  I've ridden for years, took the class back in the 80's in so cal, and am going to take the scooter-specific msf couse with my two teenage boys in August.  Inmo time and money well spent.

Exactly what Cosmo said, it really teaches you defensive driving skills specific to a motorcycle. Which of course translates right over to a scooter. It teaches you how to handle a bike better and where to look and how to steer in certain situations. I definitely found out where you look is where that bike is going to go. The figure 8 inside the box was a very big embarrassment for me because I kept looking down instead of left or right where I need the bike to go. And of course I went right out of the box and almost dropped the bike while doing it. Amazing I ended up doing 2 figure 8's correctly and got lucky I was graded on one of those.
I would take the course again if i were you. I think you will really benefit from it. Also good to be as safe as possible.

Be safe everyone, mscmkr

Hijacking this video from another thread, but you're also taught some of the basic techniques that this guy is using:

Watch this guys head just as he's about to go into a turn. He looks right where he needs that bike to go. This guy is amazing.
