Passenger Peg Not Deploying With Button
« on: September 01, 2013, 05:28:03 AM »
So I was taking a cruise with the little lady and as usual I inspect and spot clean during a good 3 minute engine warmup.

Naturally, when I'm about to sit on I deploy the pegs for my wife.  Well as I lean down to press the right-side foot-peg release button nothing happens...So I walk around and try again...still not.

So I press the button in and pull the peg out with a finger.  When I push it back in it clicks like normal but I notice it has lots of wiggle to it.  The bolt holding it in place is still tight mind you.

The spring action is not there.  There is zero resistance to return the peg to its fold-in position. (a cat running from Stig happened to brush its tail on it and it slammed shut)

Anyone know what type of spring mechanism we're dealing with here?  I sure hope its just something I need to slide back into a notch 8)  Of course I scoured the service manual twice and couldn't locate a detailed drawing of the passenger pegs.

$40 for this part!
Surely it is covered by your warranty if it failed.
"Bar Step Assembly"
Looks like it is all of one assembly, held on by one bolt (looking at the parts schematic)
I haven't got down there to see what it looks like - but maybe you can unbolt it and see what's what with the mechanism.
I'd swing by the dealer, show it to them and have them order you a new one.
Any more thoughts on shooting a video of removing the belt cover?
Would be interested in seeing that done. I am keeping up with the reg. servicing, washing and waxing - but am having more fun riding than wrenching. Maybe take another shot at the seat today.....each staple is a chore to set securely without one of the more $$ staple guns! (did just get my refund from amazon for the fake 4-way stretch vinyl they sent me! My 1st issue with amazon after yrs of purchases)
NO flip flops on a scooter!!
Ride safe up there!

Thanks for the prompt and precise reply, guru   ;D

I was going to remove the "bar step assembly" last night but it was getting dark and I didn't have time to remove all those panels. I'll probably do it today. (Soooo many things to remove)

If it is broken then I will certainly be stopping by the dealer.  I really hope it is just "askew". I also am in the "ride-over-wrench" phase.  While tinkering is fun, we only do it for the ride!

I actually did remove that belt cover once, so far.  It was quite the scene.  It was so much harder than I thought.  That cardboard gasket really didn't want to let go.  Lets just say that my neighbors thought I was trying to destroy my bike with a brick and a 2 x 4!! I had to tell them that I am a professional and never to try this on their vehicles, at least not sober.

I took several photos in order to string them together but found afterward that they couldn't quite provide a thorough overview of the process.  I'll get in there again if you really want that video.

I wish you luck on the seat.  I recently re-apolstered 6 dining room chairs.  It was not easy, and the shapes were regular with even foam for each piece. I am inclined to think the Like seat is a super pain in the ass to re-do....it sounds unnecessary but I would suggest stapling just 4 spots (front/back/sides) and then cutting most of the excess away. Always pull tight TIGHT and staple opposite from the last staple, always pulling tight. (Rather than going around).  Do every staple like this, it takes a while but the result is tighter and smoother edges. This is just a tip in case you dont already do it like this.  I find with less excess fabric to pull it sure is more difficult but you end up with little to no of those folds around the edges.

Ride safe and have fun.

Any luck on getting the passenger peg sorted?
I flip mine open every now and then while I'm down there changing the oil - otherwise they never get used, and won't ever now that I've no place for my WSO with my new cockpit configuration.

*WSO  as in F-4 backseater - Weapons System Operator
NFO if in Navy F-4

In peacetime, the LIKE 200i WSO usually handles the drive thru orders.
(Sorry, "deploying" sent me down this road. And no, I'm no ex-fighter pilot. Was a medic in Vietnam and 2 dustoff shootdowns left me permanently afraid of heights!)
