Engine dies after fill-ups
« on: October 21, 2013, 06:56:00 AM »
I've had my 300 GTi for almost a year, and I'm getting close to 7,000 miles now.  I'm having a problem with the engine after fill-ups.  After filling up, the engine starts ok, and idles ok:  But when I give it some throttle, it dies.  This started happening at around 3K miles, but not everytime I fillup.  Sometimes, I fillup about an inch below the top, and I still have this problem.  It doesnt happen everytime I fillup, but it is happening more and more frequently.  Recently, it happens about every other fillup.

When I'm having this problem with the engine dieing, I have to be patient, and apply throttle slowly.  After restarting 3 or 4 times, it will usually go.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Is it a maintenance problem?

Check your tank vents, vent tube if there are, they might be pinched... is your gas cap vented also? The general cause of this "engine dying when full" is that you have very little air in the tank and the fuel system cannot draw gas because there's vacuum inside the tank.

My fuel cap has a pinhole on top to let air in...

Or you can experiment... after filling up, loosen the gas cap (to let air in) and give it some throttle, if it doesnt die... that's it! if it still dies, that's another problem...
