First off, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that contributes to this forum. I had all the usual indications that my cdi was toast, hard starting, poor running and after 10 minutes or so the scoot would not stay running at idle. Its a 2002 ZX 50 that the previous owner bought new and literally did nothing to except put gas and oil in it and drive 5000 kilometers. After cleaning the carb, my problems still existed, but after reading several solid threads here I figured out it was most likely the cdi.
Since this is my fourth scoot, I have plenty of "spare" parts around. I had a cdi off a 2001 Yamaha Zuma. After tracing out wires in both scoots here is how the two spliced together:
2002 ZX50 CDI | 2001 Zuma 50 CDI
Green | Black - ground wire
Black/Yellow | Orange - wire to coil
White/Red | Blue/Yellow
Black/Red | Black/Red
Black/White | Black/White - ignition switch
Started one kick and runs great again. I can't say for sure this will help everyone, but perhaps it will.
