Looks like...what we call in the automotive field "dry-rot"
 Look for the DOT number. Assuming the DOT is similar to car it will tell the date the tire was made.
No matter what it is UNSAFE. Replace ASAP.  :-)

You will never feel safe on those tires, neither would I.  Simple solution is to replace them, not so simple if you are financially strapped.  Better to replace them and then you can examine them off the bike.  If they are determined to be safe, you lost a few dollars for piece of mind.  If determined to  be unsafe, you have a solid case to present.

Thanks everyone.  I've been gone from the forum for a while.  As far as the cracks are concerned, they're gone.......new tires.

Congrats on the new bike.  It may be a left over 2008.  The rubber is 5 years old.  Buy a new tire. Case closed.

Is your safety worth $100 bucks.  If it is , sell the bike and buy a car.

Maxxis is does not have DOT numbers for their tires in the US and you can not buy them retail here anymore.  They can only be sold in america as OEM from the factory directly imported.  Maxxis has DOT reg for offroad tires not on road motorcycle or scooter tires.
