Another stupid newbie question!
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:27:46 PM »
Was out riding today, and after riding for a while, I stopped at a light and the Super 8 stuttered for a second and died.
It started right back up without trouble, but seemed to be idling really rough.
I got home and started going through everything. The throttle play was fairly excessive, so (thanks to a great video wkreps posted a while back) I adjusted it. I also set the idle screw up a little.  It all seemed a little better when I fired it up.

THEN, I notice an unplugged wire. I followed it back, and it was the wire for the electric choke! I found the other end and plugged it back in, and then I went for a test ride. It seemed to be fine at stops. I got back home and let it idle in the driveway, and it idled as smooth as the day I bought it.

SO, here's the stupid question-
Does the electric choke engage anytime the engine is idling with no throttle input?  I thought it only engaged when the engine was cold.  Either way, it's running fine now.

The electric choke is actually a sealed container full of heat sensitive wax with the the mechanical parts being a heating element, and a plunger connected to a piston.
Whe the key is on it takes about 90 seconds for the wax to fully expand pushing the plunger down into a fuel port in the carb.

That port is normally open, and allows extra fuel to flow during warm up. If the auto choke fails either mechanically or electrically the port remains open, and the extra fuel flows w/ no way to stop it.

So, could that have been the issue with the rough idle and stall out?
Or just the idle adjustment?

Yeah. that made it stall. The adjustment you did simply compensated for the extra fuel.
Now you have to ride it until it is all warmed up, and re-adjust the idle mix/idle speed screws. That will get it all back to default/normal.

I do that to myself all the time. I'll start looking up something, and wind up miles away. ;D
