I have found an other method to set the valve in the perfect position. If you remove the spark plug and gently insert a screwdriver until your screwdriver touches the piston. As you turn the flywheel you can feel when it reaches the top dead center. And then you can adjust the valves
Yep, some folks use a plastic drinking straw. (but that is so unscientific  ;)!)
...just don't tell anybody!

With 2 pages explaining where the mark is I see 40-50 more pages explaining the rest.

Don't let this thing scare you. It's just a scooter engine. The worst that could happen is you never get it started, and give it to the kid that mows the lawn. He'll have it doing 90+ MPH in a weekend.
