Is there asbestos in kymco clutch and brake pads?
« on: June 08, 2014, 06:54:40 AM »
I've read that asbestos is largely eliminated in modern vehicles, but I've also read there is concern with asbestos still being used in parts coming from China. Anyone know if the stock clutch and brake pads on Kymcos are asbestos free?

Got curious about this when reading here about people sanding their clutch pads.

Best not to breathe particulate matter in, asbestos or not. Known carcinogen or not, these are foreign compounds and your body will fight them. Environmental toxicology showed me how a lung tries to heal and protect itself, but the end result can be permanently damaged lung tissue and reduced capacity. Holding breath doesn't work too well. Use a mask when working on clouds of brake dust if you value your lungs.

Just my personal opinion.  :)

I have found, and read loads of on line articles on the compounds in the brake pads as well as the clutch pads. None have ever mentioned Asbestoses.
There are odd things like Copper/Zinc/cotton but not asbestoses.

I guess it's like Government Cheese. You never really know.
How come it lasts for 10 years in their warehouse but less than 2 days at home... I wonder.

Unless you work with the "suspected" substance on a daily basis it poses little to no risk.
Truth is free silica should be of more concern.
