Oil changes
« on: March 30, 2014, 05:57:34 PM »
Hi guys, im getting the scoot out from winter storage. I always change oil with mobil 1 5w,50, change oil filter. Last year I only put 1,000 miles. I changed oil already but do you think I can keep useing the oil filter through this season? Or should ichange it?. Thank you so much for any thoughts on this.

I'd say it depends on the amount (per centage) of oil that would be left in the engine.
Most scooter filters are pretty small nut most scooter engines don't hold a lot of oil either.
If my engine held at least 2 qts and the filter about 1 cup then I probably would re-use the filter
but I would remove and drain any oil out of it before refilling the engine.

I would re-use it. If u want u could take it off and drain it, but I don't think this would be needed.  :-*

I think the manual shows change the oil every time and filter every other time.
Contrary to popular belief the filter doesn't stop the particles that wear your engine.
Those particles are so small they go right through it. The filter is to stop sticks and
twigs IE big things. You could probably get by with never changing the filter...

It is ridiculous to change oil so often, especially with synthetic oil. The oil filter is the size of some car filters so it shouldn't need to be changed very often at all.

Don't believe it about oil filters not catching contaminates because the science doesn't support that assumption at all.

For all of my bikes, I change oil and filter at 4 to 5,000 miles, using synthetics.

I ride year round here in Arizona. I change my oil in the spring so that it is new before the hot weather arrives. I use mobile one pure synthetic 15/50, (I would think 10/30 or whatever would be fine also). I use the 15/50 because we can go from the high 20's to 120 degree's, and I feel this covers all bases? I also use an additive called Tuf Oil. I use a K&N 147 filter. I only change my oil once a year. I do the same with my auto's. I have never had an engine break down. My truck had 324,000 miles on it when the head gasket blew, and was still going strong. Synthetic oil's do not break down as petroleum oil does, does not mix with combustion chamber gas's etc. With good quality air filters keeping out the dirt/dust and so on, as well as good oil filters, I feel this should pose no problems. I just turned over 50,000 miles on my 2007 carbed X500 yesterday. Run's better than new. :-* P.S. If I am going to run into the higher miles any given year, then I would change more often, (such as with my truck). But an oil change every 1000, 3000 or even 5'000 miles etc is over kill to me if u use the right oils and such. :-*
