shuttering on takeoff
« on: October 10, 2009, 03:48:13 PM »
I have a 2001 people 50 with 2,xxx km on it all original as far as I know . It runs great and will do an indicated 78 kph . Lately it has developed a shutter on takeoff . It feels like it's in the drive train rather than the engine . If it was in a car I would suspect the clutch , pressure plate , or throw out beiring . Any ideas ? Thanks .

...how flat??...I ask because flats arer going to occur..

..I have flats on my rollers as well, but I have never felt a shuddering..

..How's your belt look?

..I'm wondering about the clutch pads since it's a 2001, but you say it's only 2000km??

In 1999 I bought a new Peugeot Zenith 50 cc that developed flat spots after 500 kms and rws had to be replaced.... Ripley's believe it or not...

Check as per the previous posts, and take a look at the gear oil. You may be empty.

Great call zombie . I had changed the gear oil at 600 km , and I remember wondering if I had added enough back . It appears that with what I added tonight I have used about 320-330 ml. Does that sound about right ?  Anyway I took it for a spin and it was much better . Thanks again .

It's good to hear! There is another post here about required amounts being different from the kymco manual. I have ALWAYS filled to the top of the drain vent. It fills the case up about 1/2 way. Kymco USA can give the exact amount, but 1/2 full is a rule of thumb. Don't loose sleep on this but the oil had to go somewhere. If there is no oil on your wheel, or a puddle under the scoot I would suggest pulling the cvt cover to see if you have a leaking seal.

0.33l sounds like twice as much as it should be. Usually there is 0.12-0.13 l of gear oil in transmissions of 50-125 cc scooters.

It seems like over the last 6 month or so I have leaked all of the gear oil out . I park in my garage with a concrete floor and there have been no signs of leakage or spots on the floor so where could the gear oil have gone ? I used mobil 1 75w90 by the way . Does anyone know an honest scooter mechanic near Lynchburg,va. The last time I took it to the kymco dealer they charged me $155.00 to clean the carburator . All labor , no parts listed . Thanks .

Yes , I opened a new container of mobil 75w90 when I drained and replaced the gear oil at 600 km . It looked like 1/2 to 3/4 cup of oil drained out and it was very clean . Then I filled it untill it overflowed the the upper fill hole . I filled it again last night and the container shows about 320-330 ml now missing . Thanks .

It went into the cvt. Pull the side cover, try to keep the scoot level. You can use Brake Clean (spray can) to clean everything inside. You might want to add 7-10ml of dot brake fluid to the gear case for about 100km, and change it out w/ fresh gear oil. This may help to soften your seal enough to work again. This will only work if there is no mechanical damage on the seal. You can pull the cover again when you change the fluid and there should be MUCH less in the cvt. Check again in another 100, and if the seal corrected... If you continue to loose fluid, replace the seal...
