Stig had that random power loss...
« on: December 09, 2014, 05:41:59 PM »
Early in Stigs episode w/ the FI system I stated I had a similar issue w/ a carbed bike.
The symptom was... Great running except when I would crest a hill or roll off the throttle to coast abit. The engine would die for a few rpm, and then kick right back in like nothing ever happened.

It got to the point that any roll off of the throttle would do this. I had to keep the bike pretty much WOT all the time.

I thought perhaps the flywheel slipped a degree or two... no
Maybe a vacuum leak...  no
Bad plug... no
Torn diaphragm in the carb... no
Coil? no
Coil wire? no
Petcock? no
Valves? no
Finally pulled the cylinder kit (50mm), and installed an OEM size cylinder... no
CDI? no
Plugged up exhaust? no

Nothing left!!!

I had to re-jet for the smaller cylinder, and figured I would pull the carb down to bits for a soak/cleaning, and in doing so I took the needle out of the diaphragm.

All of the grooves for the needle clip had worn completely away. The needle was sliding up, and down almost 1/4" every time I changed throttle position. When I opened the throttle the needle fell to a lean position, and when I closed the throttle (Just a hair) the needle slid up all the way rich.

as you can see it took almost 4 months before I finally found the issue. I didn't really care cause the bike ran it was just a nuisance to deal w/. I even mentioned this in Stigs thread to try to help him sort his issue. It took till 3-4 days ago to finally sort it out.

The difference is... I didn't go buy a Honda. Just sayin'
