Like tire out of round?
« on: April 14, 2015, 02:30:39 PM »
Is my tire out of round, or am is the bouncing of the rear of the bike while up on the center stand normal while the throttle is opened?

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/7BR-J_F0L5g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I usually get a slight vibration around 40-45 mph, but it usually disappates, i've heard good/bad things about these kenda tires...

YES, I found exactely the same situation on my Like last year... The problem in general is, that Kymco obviously does not take much care on mounting tyres properly. Time is money.... Most of them are out of round from factory and also are these tyres not balanced.
So what I did was the following: I brought the scooter to the dealer´s mechanics and invited them to mount that tyre correctly centered and balanced under warranty for the sake of driving stability and safety. What they then did without any further discussion.
You will feel the difference above 45 mph.
Also do the out of round check on the front wheel.

Apart from that, better tyres of other brands are recommended anytime.
Cheers,
Robo

I have had one out of round tire on a Like 200 in the past. Covered by warranty. Is this the factory tire? You should be able to get Kymco to warranty it even if it is out of warranty period if you go bitch enough to the dealer about safety etc.

@B&L
I bought a  n e w  Kymco Like 200i last year with out of round mounted tyres and not balanced and I bought another  n e w  chinese Scooter for my girlfriend this year last month. And guess what?
Out of round mounted tyres... and of course not balanced.
Just a coincidence? Don´t think so.

My guess is that they don´t use tyre mounting paste (or whatever you/they call it over there) for the tyre to be seated properly and centered.

Well yes, time is money. Obviously in China as well....

Not all customers recognize a out of round tyre, since they only ride short distances in slow speeds.

Robo

Kymco does not balance the wheels so part of it is due to that. The other part is due to the CVT which runs by the use of a rubber belt. The distortion it causes is transfered to the rear end of the bike.

The Like 200 tire I did was literally out of round, as in a high spot on the tire causing vibration. This cannot be balanced and only remedied by replacing the tire.

Yeah, me too! Last year I noticed after a whole lot of Dyna Beads NO change in the road vibration in my wife's Like that the tires were out of round/lumpy. Way after the two year warranty so I replaced both front and rear with Metzler. Very round and Dyna Beads made the bike smooth at all speeds. Not a big fan of the Kendas. As usual, we got her a People GT300i not long after replacing the tires! We always know (now) that tire replacement means vehicle replacement follows very quickly!

Run the scoot on the center stand at idle and watch the tire spin, eyeball it head on. You'll notice high/low spots if they're there. Even better to hold a ruler to check it as it spins by holding it near the tread as it spins eyeballing it.

I must be one of the lucky ones. My Kendas now have over 9,000 miles and counting. No issues whatsoever to speak of. I just make sure they are properly inflated. That's it!

I think I will go with Michelin when the time comes to replace although Stig's recent praise of Dunlop is worth investigating.

As the discussion continues, a further interesting question arises:
How much out of round must we accept? How many mm for high and low spots? 1mm? 2mm? Or less?
What´s in and out of tolerance? Who decides that? We? The dealer? The scooter manufacturer? The tyre manufacterer?
Same thing with rims.
Cheers,
Robo

Thanks for all the input, like I said it only bugs me at around 40 mph, any more or less and i can't notice anything. Only 400 miles so far on these tires, wanted to switch to city grips, but can't justify paying even more when I just bought a brand new like!

If you are having issues take it to the dealer and ask for a warranty replacement. I have had several warranty repairs on my Like the first year. They included two batteries and a seal. Kymco each time made good by replacing the defective part.

Found this useful video on youtube, now only if I had a floor jack, but I guess anything that would provide a good solid base would work! Going to check this method first, then i'll call the dealer if it is indeed out of round. Buddy of mine said the jumping around like that while the rear tire is off the ground is perfectly normal... so guess i need to recheck it.
