I've been eyeing the maxi scooters. If I go MC I want either a cruiser or touring style. Problem with cruisers are ground clearance so twisties can be a challenge if not taken slow. BMW makes a nice touring bike in the F800GT.
I really enjoy a scooter these days so I think a second scooter (maxi) may be the way to go and made even more so through the reading of the fun you're having with your Burgman.
Hello Trout,
In my area there aren't too many Maxi scooters to reasonably consider -
45 miles to the nearest SYM CityCom dealer....(actually not certain they are still in business - really liked that scooter!)
35 miles to the BV350 dealer (and have heard poor feedback on their servicing & sales)
3 miles to my DT300i, Burgman 400 and NOS Majesty dealer - (w/very questionable service pricing!)
30 miles to a big Honda only store with left over Silver Wings and new Forza 300's.
Only one of these scooters had ABS, a good reliability record, is DIY servicing capable, a published payload of 421 lbs, left over pricing with no model changes ($2,000 off list), choice of two colors.....and delivery to my door. (although, for that price I would have gone after it) The Burgman 400.
The early versions of this model had a clutch with 3 pads - replaced a yr later with 5 pads. Long 70MPH+ runs require a close watch on the oil level on some 400's - depending on how the owner treated it during the first 1000 miles.
I love the 400's moveable back rest for this 6'3" driver. (5ea. 10mm steps) Two big DRL headlights. Big tail lights. Nice seat for two. Long wheelbase.
I've added a bigger Yuasa battery & tender tail, Iridium NGK plug, lower Ermax screen, passenger back rest and tailblazer bulbs to the rear, some reflective piping, and the Asian script. ("SkyWave" in Japan) And I think I'm finished.
Suzuki wants $520 for that stock screen - but it threw massive wind into my helmet so I replaced it.
The bigger Yuasa is security for my winter rides into the boonies. I figure EFI doesn't like a weakened battery.
The 489lbs is a handful in the garage....but not on city streets, for me.
The ride with any these larger, heavier, scooters will be a revelation to riders of our light weight LIKE.
I am so much more comfortable taking to these 55mph country highways on a bigger scooter.
They are probably all great scooters.
The Burgman forum reports that many 400's are still out there with over 100,000 miles on them.
That should be more than enough to see me out - till I forget where I live.
