People 50 2t lacks power
« on: September 03, 2015, 06:19:47 PM »
I recently got a 2000 People 50 2 cycle. It looks good and seems to run good, but 25-30 MPH is all it will do. I weigh in at 130lb. I pulled the cover and found the bushing on the variable pulley has been replaced with a smooth one. I removed the exhaust to remove the restricter washer, but there's not one in it. From what I've read, the way it is now, I ought to be getting 40mph. I think the CDI is stock, and I haven't taken the carb off to check jet sizes yet. I did measure the rollers in the variable pulley and found them to be bigger than stock. With this known info, what can I check and do to make it faster?

Looking back, when I said I wanted to be somebody, I should have been a lot more specific.

You can cut at the end of the cdi box with a hacksaw and cut deep enough until you see where you have cut a little copper wire. That's the rev limiter. It should touch close to 40 by doing that.

Thanks for that damn quick reply, scooterdad2324. I've seen a couple of pages covering this but wasn't clear if it was indeed for my CDI, and I couldn't make out how deep to cut. I know I'll see a copper wire, but at a 45 degree angle, do you have an approximate depth I need to go? I figure that will vary, it being resin filled, but do I need to worry about hitting anything else?

I cut mine only about an inch deep and you tube has some videos on this subject and I wouldn't think there is anything else in that area to worry about. But once again check the you tube video's. That's what I did before I cut into mine. Good luck and safe scooting my friend

I watched a couple of videos. When I sawed into mine, I didn't find a wire. I found a coil. Of course, as soon as I hit it, it was ruined. I need to find a replacement CDI for a 2000 People 50 2 stroke, USA model. Where can I get one fast?

Going back and looking under bright light, I never knew I went through the wire. I destroyed it. Can't blame anyone else. But for future reference, DON"T go too deep! There is  a coil there, and if you touch it, you can toss that CDI and start over.

This is what I was referring to. Something like this.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNRESTRICTED-CDi-for-KYMCO-People-50cc-2-STROKE-Spacer-50cc-/181264909954

I'd contact Scooter Asassins and see what they can do so you dont have to be cutting a CDI again

Thanks for the link, but I had already found that one. If you scroll down to the compatible list, the People 50 has great big letters saying, "not for USA or Canadain scooters".

I have a hard time believing its the CDI box. In my experience, with a 2002 People 50 2T, between the variator pin and CDI box, the variator pin yielded far more speed gains than the CDI. I went from 26 mph to 45 mph (indicated) just from the variator pin, and the derestricted CDI box got me to 48-50. Something else is wrong.
