Howdy from Western North Carolina, Poots.  Good thinking on asking for advice on a forum like this.  Everyone here could tell you something, or many things, that will help you and make this journey easier.
I've been riding for a while, but, have only had my '07 Xciting 500 since December.  I love it.
But, by all means take the MSF course.  I've taken it 3 times.  I did the beginner class once, and the experienced course twice, just to
keep my skills sharp.
As with the folks here, the women and men of the MSF courses will be able to tell you all about the science of motorcycling...and will relate
to you ideas you'll likely not hear anywhere else.  They'll be relating many things that can and will save your life.

I'd say though -- to be thoughtful in your selection of appropriate riding gear...never ride impaired, always ride defensively (people in cages sometimes overlook us....always ride like they may not see you)....be focused....and have fun.

I could never get the hang of riding impaired... If I do get the key in the hole, and get it started I always do those snake trail take offs and wind up under the bike. I gave up trying at 22 years old. I'm 22 and 37 minutes old now.  (53)
