Gel Battery for 2009 Agility 125
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:36:24 PM »
Hi There,

I am in need of a new battery and thought of buying a Gel one.
Found this here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mighty-Max-12V-6AH-GEL-Battery-for-Kymco-125-Agility-125-2010-2012-/191637979430?hash=item2c9e838126, but it says that it's only good for 2010-2012 models.
Can anyone confirm? I thought there was no model change between 2009 and 2010.
It is a bit larger though than this battery here: http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/12v-ut5l-bs-yt5l-bs-agm-scooter-battery.html

Other suggestions are also welcome.
My goals are simple:
  • scooter has to start after standing for a week or two in the cold (-5 - 15F)
  • no messing with acid, electrolytes etc.
  • about $40 max

Thanks for looking,
Emil

If the dimensions are compatible, consider being a "guinea pig" for the ScrappyDog Power Lithium.  General FAQ.

Lithium battery do not perform well under 0c you could not leave it in -26c for a couple of weeks and expect it to work. If you leave your scooter that long in those temperatures you may as well get a normal battery and remove it when you are not going to use it within the next few days and keep it inside.

sorry, haven't written that clearly. I meant -5 - +15F. That's about the temp when the scooter stays in the shed. And of course if there's too much snow and ice on the road. Last winter that kept on going for quite a while.
The original battery lasted 6 years and I never took it out.

If you have a power outlet in the shed, maybe a battery tender would be a good idea.

May as well just get a cheap standard sla battery or gel battery if its cheaper. No point splashing out on something better if the standard already lasts 6 years.

That's a good idea not to get anything fancy  ;)
So does anyone know why the Mighty Max Gel battery is only good for 2010+ Agilities?

I would think that this Bikemaster Gel battery should also fit: http://www.amazon.com/BikeMaster-TruGel-Battery-YTX5L-BS-Blue/dp/B00D9GZDM2/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1441201670&sr=1-1&keywords=ytx5l-bs&refinements=p_89%3ABikeMaster. It is also a YTX5L-BS

The YUASA YTX5L-BS is pretty much everywhere listed as compatible, but it has only 4 Amps and I'd need to mess with acid, sealing and first charge.

No advice anyone? Nobody put a gel battery into a 2009 model and still remembers which one it was? Or maybe just some thoughts why a battery would be ok for a 2010 model, but not for 2009?

Please, please help!

Thank you.

Why not just get a normal battery?
It's really easy to put the electrolyte in, then just charge it for a day with a smart charger.

I had a gel battery in my motorcycle,  it lasted a few days after the warranty expired. Probably just bad luck.
Had to get a tow truck to get me home, 2 cells had a short circuit, the starter didn't even make a click sound :-)
Got a normal battery after that, still in the bike after 4 years.

Maybe I'm too late here. Go for a solid AGM battery. Scorpion batteries are very well known & have excellent build quality. For $32.00 (free shipping) These are sealed & depending on where you live, delivery is usually 2-3 days. Mine came in almost fully charged. Put it on my small Deltran Battery Tender Jr. & it was fully charged within 2 hours!

Here is the link for your 2009 Kymco Agility 125:

Good luck. You DO NOT need a gel battery.

Quick update: I ended up ordering a YTX5L-BS from Amazon which was listed as compatible. But it actually didn't fit, so I went to a local store and spent extra $$. The correct size is 7A-BS, so the battery that MassScoot suggested is right.

Of course I could have opened the battery compartment to check out the battery before ordering, but the scooter is 20yards away from my office room...
