High flow filter element in stock air box
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:58:37 AM »
Alot of people have told me not to run a pod filter even if shielded so for now what I have done is get some UNI red filter element and cut it to fit my stock box this is really open compared to dense OEM filter.

Exactly right.  I don't recommend aftermarket filters & exhaust because there is very little to be gained in power.  Better to move to a scooter with a bigger engine.  My Grandvista 250 will blow away any 150cc no matter what the mods and it will beat most modded 200cc's as well.  A 150cc will beat most modded 125cc, etc.

To gain power by changing the air filter or exhaust which increase air flow the extra air must be matched with more gas to keep things in balance. So changing the air filter will require a larger main jet to match the increased air.  This is a mix of art and science and involves trial and error.  It is best to order several jet sizes to make it easier to experiment.  The best way is to find a guide for your engine / make / brand of scooter and follow that guide - buy the same air filter, exhaust, etc.  Then match it to the same jet sizes.

Always monitor and take pictures of the spark plug to verify that the motor is not running too lean / hot indicated by a white spark plug and not to rich (too much gas) indicated by a black or carbon-ed plug.

More fuel is not better.  Beyond a certain point feeding more gas with a bigger jet will actually reduce power an cause the engine to bog.

Final strike... While you will have fun and learn something in the process the carb is basically dead except on small engines.  Everything else has gone fuel injected and the computer is updated with a chip instead of changing jets.  So jetting a carb is a dying art and is also a complex process to get it right.  Most jetting improves some rpm ranges at the expense of others.

I have to disagree with you about exhaust putting Tecnigas NextR chrome exhaust on my scooter has shown the biggest overall improvement in acceleration and top speed there was a huge very noticeable differance and this was first mod I did from stock so it wasn't from other mods just exhaust.  Now as for filter mod I have since doubled up on UNI red filter element and went up to a 107 main but I think I am too rich which for a 2T isn't really a bad thing but I'm probably gonna drop back down to a 105. ANd yeah alot of people have gone to FI but you can still buy new Motors and Carbs all day long for the guys who love them and thats the only way a 2T runs.

No worries.  It is just that I read about how some people put tons of mods in to a smaller motor and then end up unsatisfied and going to a bigger scooter but if someone enjoys modifying for the fun of it like a hobby I don't see anything wrong with it.  I though about modding my GV250 but then I found there were very few mods available so I gave up and stayed stock except for my pilot jet.

Where did you get the filter material and how much did it cost?

Karl I had cyclegear here in Charlotte order it for me its the UNI red coarse filter it'sabout 12" X 16" and I think after taxes was about 18 bucks or so but not bad for something I could get 3 sets of doubled up filter from. And yeah some people need bigger I like 2 stroke and I like 50cc my bike is huge I have almost everything but the BBK on and already keep up with some 4T 150cc.

I was told this thing sounds like a turbo sucking air at certain RPM ranges lol

Thanks, Pace. Stumbled on some UNI green stuff just today. Gonna try what you did.

that green stuff doesn't flow as good as the red so I would try to run with just one layer of it for now. but be prepared to jet if you wanted this is more than I'm gonna use I would be willing to send you enough filter element to double up on the red and also I 1 inch prefilter to get even more airflow to box.

mrbios makes a very good point about getting larger scooter, however 49cc scooters are very cool.

When I 1st discovered scooters, I decided early on would be better to get 150 4T, rather than mod 49cc.  However, I still got 49cc and have been having a blast modding it.  The other point is 49cc scooters are lighter, so easier to move around in the garage, at the gas pump, etc, a big point for me.  As it is, I have dropped my scooter 2 times working on it, was a freak accident both times, will never happen again, but would have been worst with larger scooter.

Also, I have talked with at least 2 others that have larger scooters and dropped them.  One guy dropped it in the garage just moving it, the other dropped it at the gas station, so easy to do.

Got my son-n-law nice 150 4T scooter and he loves it, doesn't do anything except ride it, and change oil.  Maybe, when I get my 49cc all figured out, and just want to ride, I may get a 150 4T or something even larger.  For now I like my 49cc better than son-n-laws 150 4T.  Cheers
