Ticking sound, engine and electrical system OFF
« on: February 08, 2016, 11:45:40 AM »
All,
just bought a 08-2015 DT300i with 3600 km's

Oh, do I like this scooter!

At this moment there is one strange thing I'd like to have explained.
Last week I entered my garage and noticed a ticking sound comming from my bike, at first I thougt it was the exhaust cooling down but the sound was to regular, as regular as clockwork.

The engine was off, the key was out, no system what so ever was running.
The sound is best to be described as that of a relay and it comes from the right side, exhaust side of the bike.

After making contact, pushing some buttons, switching the emergency (red) swithc etc.etc the sound kept on ticking, also with the side stand down.
The only way I could stall it for just a moment was by turning on and off the hazard lights.

The sound dissapeard and I could not find any problem with the battery the next morning.

Now, the bike is off since last friday and my wife just texted me the tick was back.

Can anyone tell me what this could be?

My guess from what you described is a malfunction of the "Hazard Controller" mounted on the right-hand rear of frame.

Thanks for your reply Karl.

If this is the case, can it drain my battery?
Can it do any other harm?

Yes, it can drain your battery. Like leaving the seat unlatched. It is a malfunction and as you described, it is activating the turn signal relays but not lighting the lamps. Try locating and unplugging the Hazard Controller to see if the problem goes away.

Update:

Brought it in the other day and no problem was found (as always).
I made a movie where the sound was clearly noticed and my dealer replaced the controller to be sure.
