What exactly is striped? I have run a die over the crank ends in the past w/ very good results.

ok i ran the die over with a snap-on die 12mm 1.25 and it worked great.im never using an impact gun on that crank again.i use all hand tools now.

The nuts on both ends of the crank are supposed to be "capture" nuts, meaning they have a slight deformity in their shape. Although you cannot thread a new nut on by hand, an impact should not be used. ( as you pointed out). Glad you got it sorted out though. In a pinch if a new nut is not available a little dab of blue lok tite should be used.

..i've always been afraid of using impact wrenches on my scoot...i've seen the damage they can do in other applications when not used correctly..

wordslinger how do you torque down you crankshaft nut? what do you use to hold it in place?

...I use a pair of vise-clamps...they spread apart just far enough, with the adjusting screw backed out...clamp them aroung the teeth of the flywheel, and just prop them against a piece of 2 X 4 on th floor...use a 1/2" drive 17mm socket and ratchet on the nut...it's all I had handy the first time I ever opened the cvt, but it works ok...and it was FREE!!..

..I'm a maintenance supervisor...I've seen soo much damage done to stuff by impact wrenches used improperly...Don't like the idea of all that pounding force being introduced into my engine either..

The manual calls for 5.5-6.5 kgf/m which equals about 40-47 lbs/ft.  I use a cordless impact gun on mine.  It is relatively weak at a rated 85 lbs/ft.  I just use this to re-install the nut.  I don't sit there and drive the crap out of it, but I get it on there pretty good!  I have never had any problems with the threads even coming close stripping, I did strip one of the nuts trying to get it off the first time though!  It was obviously on tighter than that before!

ya its ok to use impact to take off but use the old elbow to put back on. you can make tools for this
 or get theam at your  motorcycle shop.
