I had all kinds of fun trying to get the bolt off the variator and clutch. I tried two different impact wrenches and two different compressor set ups.
I was looking at another forum and found out that someone had made their own tool. So I made this for $5.
It is two construction straps, a couple 1/4 bolts, a smaller bolt and nuts... and a piece of lumber.
The larger bolts fit into the hole in the clutch and the strap pivots against the wood to hold it still. After all the time I wasted with the impact wrench, it took seconds to built this tool and even less to break loose the bolts in the clutch and variator. I sure Kymco variators are the same as Vespa in their construction. Vespa have a starter ring with teeth that can be used t hold the variator but no teeth on mine. That said, it may be helpful to some one reading this forum. To remove the variator, the strap had another longer bolt that pressed against the bottom edge of the CVT casing to provide the needed resistance. Worked great!
My variator before I removed it to change the rollers to sliders. I slid the bolts into the two holes on the fan side of the variator sheaves.
