Oil pump adjustment and test in People 50 2-stroke?
« on: April 25, 2010, 02:43:50 PM »
Hi...my Poeple 50 2-stroke's piston and rings are badly scored---looks like  lack of lubrication.  Is there any way to test the oil pump?  Can it be adjusted?  The manual doesn't say anything useful about this.

I'll be installing a 70cc kit but would prefer not to do oil pre-mix if I can avoid it.

Thanks in advance.

There is no real way to test it that I'm aware of.  My understanding is that it's not really a pump, but rather a meter.  The oil is pulled through by the vacuum from the carb.  The "pump" just meters how much oil is allowed through.  If you disconnect the line from the carb I don't think it will actually push any oil without the vacuum on the end.

If you're going with a 70cc I'd do away with the oil pump altogether.  In my opinion it is a liability you your new engine!

I suggest the opposite on this one. I kept the pump as it adds what I burn in the tank as far as octane. I have 2t oil in my tank as well as Sea Foam at all times. I add Sea F. every third, but it is still there in dilute amounts. I add 1/2oz ish 2t per whatever the tank holds...2Ltre? The bad thing about running the pump is if it is NOT adjusted right it will seize your engine. ESPECIALLY if it is Modded. The stock ratio on a ZX is 75:1 at idle. The problem is IF you are doing 57 mph at 1o'ooo rpm's the throttle is fairly well open. You close it to slow, and turn... You are still turning 10,000 rpm's but the pump see's idle. I doesn't hurt to have both as I have forgotten to fill the 2t bottle, and have NEVER seen the lite on except for when I turn the key

I'm all about knowing for certain the exact amount of oil my engine in getting at ALL times!  That's why I did away with the pump completely.  It would be really aggravating to blow my motor over something as stupid as not getting enough oil!  I actually find it much more convenient to premix and fill my tank at home from my 5 gal can!

Oh Yeah Wait! Sorry garicao... There is an oil bleed screw that primes the pump. The ONLY thing that can go wrong is the threaded shaft on the pump itself. That usually happens from long term stored scoots. Or scoots w/ the factory breakin oil past the due date. Your hoses will be hardened enough to break by now so just break one off, and bring it to the auto parts place. Pull your pump to see that it is good. The "Teeth" are obvious. I still say run it. If the bottle doesn't empty you know it's broke. Like shska said why fix it... Always put some in the tank!
