Tightening Mirror Bases

After an accidental tip-over on it's side,  my 250 Xciting Mirrors became
very loose at the base.  Like a quick break-away feature.  There is a
removable plastic cover at the top of the vertical 2" long post just
off the handlebars.  Inside is a 6 or 7mm nut.  Is this the way,  these
mirrors are tightened ?

Yes, the mirror screws into the base, adjust the arm to where you want it and tighten the lock nut to keep it firm.

And guess what.  I tried to order the little plastic cover you mentioned.   NOt available as a separate item.  Must order the whole mirror assembly!!!  So, I got one on one side and not on the other.     I'd put it back on with a dab of silicone or something so it doesn't shake off and get lost like mine did!

Just thought about this further.  Actually there is a nut under the rubber boot right where mirror stalk goes into handlebar.  THAT's the way to tighten it normally. Check and see if the whole stalk is rotating there.  I don't think the nut at the top is meant to be messed with in normal circumstances.  What it does is provide necessary pre-load to make the mirror firm in any position.

Thanks a lot....The mirror assembly screws into the handlebar mount.  The
mirror itself can be manuevered and screwed round and round to miss the windshield.

Once it's in,  then tighten down the black 4 sided nut.  The upper nut under the cover
is apparently the tensioning so the mirror itself can be adjusted.
