Brand New People 50 2011 Derestricing advice
« on: April 19, 2013, 03:15:51 PM »
Hello all.  I'm new to scoots and just bought a brand new People 50.  I'm also new to this forum and I'm loving it so far!  There is a wealth of knowledge on here.

You can follow my journey to getting my scooter here.

http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=8755.15

So I'm expecting her to arrive today or tomorrow and I have a few questions about derestricting for those of you that have already gone through this.  Maybe you can save me some time and $.

This guy seems to know what he's talking about.  So I'm gonna use this as a guideline.

First things first. The variator drive boss needs to be replaced with a derestricted one. Here is the best place to order the part as well as a diagram of the variator. Item 100 is what you want. Make sure you call to order. Tell them you want the derestricted boss and mention the forum for a discount.

You'll also want to change the main jet. They put tiny jets in these newer models. About an 80 is what you want. You should get a solid 40 mph(flat ground speed) after the new boss and jet.

You may read that the CDI has a rev limiter. It doesn't on newer models, but I'm beginning to believe the higher RPM timing curve is different. Either way wouldn't worry to much about that at the moment.

Again these newer models are very restricted. If you really want to open it up consider an aftermarket exhaust... and even better a big bore kit to go along with it. Exhaust should get you up around 45 mph or even 50 with a little CVT tuning. With the BBK you can expect 55+, again with CVT tuning.

P.S. A BBK will give you huge torque and acceleration gains. No more struggling up hills  ;D

The dealer I bought mine from derestricted the cvt boss for free so I'm already off to a good start.

Next, the main jet.  I've only tinkered with minor carb issues in the past.  I cleaned one on a dirt bike I had growing  up and that is the extent of my carb experience.  Is there anything I need to know to make sure I don't damage the carb when replacing the jet to an 80 as suggested?  Also, any suggestions on where to buy the jets?

Next is the aftermarket exhaust.  This seems like a pretty simple upgrade.  Just unbolt the old one and put the new one on right?  I've read conflicting opinions about which aftermarket pipe to buy so I'm a little concerned that I'm gonna buy an expensive pipe that will too be restricted.  Again, any suggestions on the brand of exhaust and where to buy would be greatly appreciated.  Success stories are a plus.

I'm not really interested in upgrading  to a big bore kit just yet.  I'd like to get quite a few miles on the stock engine to feel like I got my money's worth out of it.  Maybe after the warranty runs out I'll upgrade to bbk.

Thanks for reading

The downside of "laws don't apply to me" mentality is legislative statute amendments.

N.C. legislation would put stricter rules on moped operators

Not sure what you're implying by your post, but thank you for the information.

I sent my representative a very long email about this.

First off, welcome to the forum newscooter.

You have a lot to learn. I was naive once too :-\ . Not sure this Peters guy knows what he is talking about  ;) ;) ;)

Is that a 2t people? What year model is it (Reference for other members)?

First off, if your scoot is brand new you need to break it in for the first 500 miles and then take it to be serviced if you want to keep that warranty. We'll get into that. But the usual break in procedure... avoid WOT and keep the rpms down, and for gods sake let the thing warm up when cold. Only takes a minute or two.

You should know that if you plan on modifying or even just servicing your scoot yourself you're going to void that warranty right away. I know bummer  :'( . If you have lots of money and don't have a problem with your dealer holding your scoot for a few days at a time by all means take it there. Me... I said f$$$ the warranty when the dealer charged me $250 to change the gear oil, spark plug, and clean the air filter. So that's that.

If you were able to swallow that last pill we'll move on. Changing jets or cleaning the carb is no big deal at all. Nothing to be scared of. Just take your time the first time. Have a clean work area. As far as going to a larger jet, first ask your dealer if they installed a larger jet when they took the CVT boss out. If not it's okay. I wouldn't worry about it until after the break in. Where to buy jets? lol, good luck. Your dealer might be able to get them.

Now the Exhaust. A lot of people here have Tecnigas exhaust. Good pipes but not the best. Great for the price anyway. The Tecnigas Next R is what I have. RS2 is better for BBK. I was like you and doubted I would ever put a BBK on... Yeah... Anyway, the other middle-class brand is Leo Vince. They make exhaust for lots of bikes and people swear by them. I just know most people here have Tecnigas.  :-\

I've given you enough to think about. Kymco makes an awesome scooter. Treat it well and it will treat you well. Have fun and most importantly be safe. Stick around the forum...

Hi.  Thanks for replying Peters.

It's a 2011 which is the last year they made this 2t people.

Wow, for $250 for a service, the warranty is looking less and less impressive.  I'll probably just service it myself.  The closest authorized dealer to me is about 45 minutes away.

I live in Kinston.  Small town between New Bern and Goldsboro.

As far as the exhaust, did you have to do any mod's to your technigas exhaust?  Or is it ready to go from the factory?

Thanks for the good info about the 500 mile break-in rule of thumb.  I didn't realize that.  I'll be gentle with her.

To be honest, I haven't even started it up yet.  I serviced the battery and and installed it, but I was getting ready to throw a birthday bash for my girl when it was delivered Saturday.  Let's just say I'm just now getting back to normal. ;)

I'll probably take her on her maiden voyage tomorrow morning some time.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me make sure she's in tip-top shape.
