XC 500 EFI - hesitation and worse.
« on: March 31, 2016, 11:44:51 AM »
Yesterday, it started.
A hesitation at speed, it happened about 5 times on a 30km freeway ride.

I stopped at Bike shop, and they indicated maybe air filter, spark plug, nothing serious.

I replaced those, and today it got much much worse, more hesitation than actual acceleration, and lots of cutting out.

By the time I got to the bike shop, I was hearing some engine noises that I have not heard before.

Mechanic says engine damage, maybe crank bearings, or exhaust camshaft again, or decompression cam, etc.

What can I say except  argh!

When the big hesitation hit my EFI'd LIKE200i it was at a certain RPM area - and was a failed throttle position sensor - replaced under warranty after a lengthy battle with the dealer. KYMCO USA rep. stepped in and solved the issue.
Hope your's is as simple and cheap to fix.
(or time to shop low mileage 300's, which seem nearly bullet-proof?)
Good luck

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

I would listen to Stig before ant shop/"mechanic". I think your 500 is EFI, right? Have you done the Initialize procedure yet?

Crossbolt, yep, I have done the tps reset about 3 times now.
The hesitation when it started, only happened once bike was hot from a fast run.
I had noticed that engine seemed a bit hotter than usual, gauge at middle bar, but at the top edge. And the oil filter would not hand turn off, I had to use a waterpliers. That was strange I thought.
I hope it is just the tps, or other sensor.

Do you have the Kymco analyzer tool or have access to one?

I have a windows xp software that accompanies a Chinese analyzer,  that does work. I run the xp through virtual box.
But the scoot is at the shop now.

xsel,
You have to be one of the most dedicated scooter owners on any continent.
I have re-read many of your posted troubles with your beloved KYMCO 500.
Bless your heart - you keep hanging in there come what may with that 500 scooter of yours.
I am not one to tell a fellow that he has an ugly dog....or disrespect any fellow's scooter - to which he is so insanely attached......
However....

If ever I meet a person shopping for a 500 Kymco I am going to direct him to your posts and Waynes, and to that youtube video of the fellow trying to start his on a cool day.

These scooters have a really big single cylinder engine - which makes it a pretty rare bird - but it really seems that there are unresolvable  issues with way too many of these KYMCO 500's. The issues are repeated --- and owners and mechanics have found no way to solve them.
That is a shame - because the owner's report that they are a blast when they are working - between the trouble times!
Good luck,
Stig

Stig, sigh! I am heavy hearted about this scoot, but just can't give up or give in.
Each time it is just $1000-1500 to fix,and I find it, and move on.
A replacement kymco 300 will $5000-6000 and that kind of money will require me to take another bond on my house.!
That is too painful to consider, especially since the house is paid off.
So, onwards Christian soldiers, Tralala.....(icon shoe=slogging, and keyboard=song) 👞🎹,otherwise it is this (icon=gun) 🔫, definately not something worth considering... ☺️
EDIT:
These icons are not showing, thus descriptions.
