XC500EFI battery x 2 both flat in 1 hour
« on: April 13, 2016, 02:25:18 PM »
Hi all.

I was so excited to get my scoot back, I took It for a run to a town 30km away, and then cruised the streets for 30 min.
After I switched off the engine, it would not restart, battery flat symptom.
My wife delivered a fresh battery and I drive 50km to the mother city (cape town) to fetch pizza. After the purchase, again, scoot would not start, flat battery symptom.
Again, the wife to the rescue with jumper cables. 1st turn of the key, and it starts right up.

NO dash lights indicating a problem,  so what could it be.?

I re-read all 13 pages of your posts. I think you got a Motobat as the final replacement, didn't you? Everything is happy when you jumpstart so I would suspect your charging system is below normal. I think I read the only thing not replaced is the stator. There is a regulator-rectifier that is part of the system but not actually in the stator that might be defective. Sounds like service manual-voltmeter-testing time! Other than that, assuming you probably reconditioned every grounding point, I haven't any bright ideas. Stig put it best when he said something like he really admired your persistence; so do I! Also your wife must be a super gal to back you up like she does! You could be the Burt Monroe of the Cape!

Thanks Karl. Giving up is not part of my philosophy. I am the boss of this scoot, not the other way around.! 😊 (smiley face icon)

It's going right back to the shop tomorrow,as they must have messed something up ,because this was not happening before the cam job.

KYMCOSA has been notified this is the 4th cam, and awaiting their response.

I took the scoot back to the shop. Amazing, no argument from the mechanic.
He put on the kymco scanner, and it immediately showed him that it is not charging, but strangely enough, there is no battery led shining on the dash.
Anyways, that is being looked at now.

UPDATE: The mechanic tried a rectifier, but no change to the no charging situation.
He now says he is going to take a look at the stator.
That is going to be Mondays job.
All have a good weekend, on two wheels.

Ok, getting closer to bring on the road again.
The stator is confirmed to be shorting.
I have given the go ahead, and soon, the joy of the open Road will be felt again!

Awright! Halleluia! Really glad to hear this. Hope the "shorted stator" is not a 500 congenital defect. I will go out on a limb here and bet your temp gage will work correctly after the new stator and a charged battery.

Ok,  we are back!
The new stator has sorted the flat battery issue, confirmed by several hours driving  with multiple stops and each time on the first turn of the key , she stated right up.
I was carrying my spare battery with, just in  case....
Someone would literally murder me if she had to rescue me again!

The temp gauge is hovering in the middle mark, with a tiny piece of the middle mark visible on the colder/lower side.
I watched it like  a hawk, and while it fluctuates a little bit, the needle never went 2mm above the muffle mark like it did last week, so I am immensely relieved.
All is good with the world once again 👌

OK, xsel, Stig & I wanna weekly report on this thing just to make sure!! This is really great to hear! How was the old original stator shorted? Mfr defect, vibration, poor insulation on windings, you get the idea.....
