Maggie Valley, N. Carolina, USA

Just returned from a week there. Was supposed to be a scooter trip but we wimped out because of the forecast. Found out that Appelacian weather is different: the rain usually gets sucked out before it hits the valley floor. We did get some rain about last Thursday and it was wet all the way from Maggie to Knoxville. Plenty of motorcycles, three-wheelers and Polaris Slingshots going to and from the valley so I know we could have done the trip with our rainsuits mostly under the seats.

You should see the museum, Wheels through Time in Maggie! Mostly Harley motorcycles, some unusual cars, one airplane powered by a H-D V-twin, circa 1920 and a lot of surrounding personality.

This past week was a Polaris Slingshot rally in the Valley. Very interesting rigs, similar to the Can-Am and Spyder but it has a steering wheel and you get IN it not ON it! Based on a GM 4 cylinder engine looking very much like the the Saturn DOHC engine and some auto transmission. Prety high-tech looking and some equipped with really smooth stainless headers. Base models have the usual gorpy cast iron. Many participants were upgrading to turbos and some LED bling but most were cruising around and talking to curious old farts like me.

Restaurants were plentiful, all good and if you stay hungry it is your fault!

Next time I am riding on two wheels not four!

I have done a number of riding vacations based out of Maggie Valley.  It's a great town to stay in and an awesome area to ride.  Due to the elevation it is much cooler there than most of the South East so it's comfortable even mid summer.  In the fall it's a great place to catch the leaves changing.

Went there last Fall and rained every day. If we wanted to ride we'd need to suit up which we did. Got on the BRP and rode over Mt. Mitchell in a total whiteout with freezing rain. Deb and I froze our butts off but it is now a fond memory. Great little town.
