It runs!!!
« on: June 28, 2016, 09:25:15 PM »
I posted last fall that my 500 would not start, and would not even crank over one turn. New starter, solenoid, etc, no matter what battery and booster, still no crank. The last thing I could think of was that the decompression cam (on the exhaust cam) was not doing its job. The starter would only rotate the engine one turn and stop on the compression stroke. So I opened it up and pulled both cams, which were appreciably worn. I ordered new ones and received them a couple of months later. They have been sitting for several months, but I finally got around to the installation and reassembled the engine. I really was not very optimistic about the cure because there didn't seem to be enough wrong with the cams to keep it from starting, and the decompression device seemed rotate the way it's supposed to. To my surprise it cranked over fine, and after several tries fired up! Still need to reassemble body panels and such before a real road test, but I'm chuffed for the moment.

Road test good - well almost

Put the rest of the scooter back together, changed oil and filter, and road tested today. Engine runs strong with no problems except a coolant leak at the thermostat housing. I had opened the thermostat up to make room for head bolt removal. Found o-ring on the floor -- whoops!  Should be no problem to get the o-ring back in.  Also, the speedometer doesn't work? I think I remember the speedometer quit last year and I had to adjust the front pickup a bit. Probably that again.  Things are definitely looking up!

That speedometer cable is very iffy. I have had to make a new one twice already. It gets pinched where it is secured, and then the wind buffering it, cause the strands to break.

Speedometer reset
« Reply #5 on: July 11, 2016, 11:01:32 PM »
Turns out I just needed to do the speedometer reset procedure (disconnect battery negative lead, turn ignition on, then reconnect battery). Speedometer now works fine, or at least as fine as it ever did. It's still wildly optimistic and reads about 15 percent higher than actual speed -- annoying but workable.
