Sting 50 Help - AC or DC - CDI stuff
« on: July 05, 2016, 08:52:05 PM »
Hey all - new to the forum and to scooters.  Just picked up a non-running Sting 50 for $100 and am working towards troubleshooting it.  It's had a couple mods by the previous owner, who bought it new in 2009 (80cc and exhaust) and I'm looking for Help! to get it going again.

I'm pretty tech savvy, read schematics and all.  I'd love to troubleshoot this thing, but I'm quickly learning it was a short-lived scooter and there is so little out there on this thing.  This site included since there is no "Sting" category.  I'm hoping to find out what it is I have and what it is out there I can make compatible with it.  Further modding it is not a problem.

Right now there is no spark with (what looks like) a new NGK plug.  I put another plug I had onto the end of the coil wire (it was from my old motorcycle) and it fired weakly, but the resistance of this plug doesn't compare to the value for the scooter plug (something like 300 ohms compared to 5K for the BR8HSA).  I can easily try a new plug, and might, but I hate shot-gun fixes.

Most tech on YouTube say "Use your spare to determine what's broke," but I'd rather run tests on everything and buy what it needs.  Lacking much in the way of documentation I might have to spend $150 on "spares", but I also keep getting mixed signals on what to get or what I will get if I order something.  So...

Does anyone know if this thing is an AC or DC scooter and what aftermarket CDI can I replace mine with.  I'm leaning towards this being the fault, but all of the replacements out there call themselves out at 4-cycle GY6 versions.  Mine is for-sure a 2-stroke.

The image on Kymcomonsterpartsomething of my CDI shows no pigtails.  Mine comes with about 2" of wire and mounting one without will mean zip-ties to hold it to the frame.

Anyway, just starting a thread and hoping some of you will know exactly what I have and what I may need.

Thanks!

The key to finding answers is to know what kind of machine you have.  Most Kymcos are similar mechanically to other makes - you just have to figure out what yours is.  That's the key to understanding which parts to use.  That said, there's many different CDI types, and Kymco will "mix and match".  Many aftermarket sellers like ScrappyDog or Scooter Assassins can help.  Check their websites. Make notes as you go.  The notes will be useful later.
