Because the socket of my LIKE only has a 0.8 amp fuse I just use a .5 amp usb charger and that does my phone ok.  For my GPS I fitted a .5 amp fuse in the end of the plug and that still works.   Don't want to risk blowing that .8 amp fuse.

I use a 14,000mAh portable battery pack I stow in my top case to keep the phone charged.

Is that one of those small jump start units?  Could see where that would be very handy, smart thinking.

when I was working on throttle cable I went ahead and changed the fuse holder and fuse on the charging port to a 2.2 or 2.5 amp fuse

That's a good idea, but this is one that just has 4 USB ports for charging mobile devices.

The external battery packs work great. And they can be used at home and at work as well. Something like this one, but there are several to choose from;
