Super ATV Folding Windshield
« on: September 17, 2019, 05:05:03 PM »
Hey guys, just wanted to share a few updated photos of my UXV 450i. I recently added a folding windshield from Super ATV, and it really works great. Rather than a solid windshield, I really like this model, which allows you the option to have the windshield fully closed, cracked open to allow some ventilation or fully open for an open air cab. There are two gas struts on the upper section of the windshield that lift it up and hold it up when fully open. I don't think you'd want to go riding fast across rough terrain when fully open, but it's fine for driving short distances at low speed. The windshield is quiet and seems of good quality.

I was also concerned whether this windshield would work with the aftermarket roof I purchased from Off-Road Body Armor, due to the slight downward curve at the front of the roof. Well, I am happy to report there is still sufficient clearance for the windshield, and it works perfectly.

Finally, I recently added a 2,500-pound Badlands winch from Harbor Freight. I know, I know...those things are CHEAP. But heck, with the Super Coupon, who can pass up $50 for a 2,500-pound winch with wireless remote? At that price, I can go though four of them before I pay the price of one name brand model. Besides, the thing seems to work just fine. I did replace the steel cable with synthetic rope (I hate the way those cables fray and cut your hands!) and bought a rubber stopper for the front, because they don't include one with the winch. The hardest part of the whole winch installation was just mounting the winch to the KYMCO factory winch-mounting plate, because the Badlands winch is a two-hole mount configuration and the KYMCO factory winch plate is set up for a four-hole configuration. Thanks to a buddy and his tools, we made some "custom modification" and got it to work out just fine.

Anyway, here are the photos. I think the machine is looking pretty sharp now with all the aftermarket accessories. The only thing left to add now is a plow in time for the first snowstorm this winter!

Looks really good! Have you had a chance to use that winch yet? I bought one for my Jeep and trailer. Mounted it on a receiver mount to move from front to back. Haven’t used it yet just wondering how it performs.

I haven't needed to test the winch under load yet, so I can't give you any feedback. I actually got stuck in the mud a couple weeks ago and wanted to use it, but I was in an open area with no trees close enough to get the winch to. So, I ended up having to walk back to my vehicle and drive over and pull the machine out with a rescue strap. Oh well...

They sell an anchor for that. It’s not the best thing on the planet but it’s worked for me in a pinch more than once.

Save your cable and add hooks at both ends, you never know when you might need an extension, I have and extra 150' of cable plus the 30 ft on the winch.  It is actuall faster to uncoil that 50 ft cable by hand then only a few feet off the winch.  Winches are great but not fast!

Funny you mentioned the mounting plate issue.  I went with the Badlands 3500# winch and it has the 4 hole setup.  I ended up ordering a Kfi mount and ran into some issues as well.  I spent a whole afternoon messing with that dang mounting plate.  I don't feel so bad now.

Looks real nice. How do you like the bottom fitment against the hood?  I have the solid windshield from super atv and seem to have some gaps like the cuts are a little off.  I have the 2017 450i turf model.

Yes, there are some small gaps there at the bottom where the foam rubber gasket doesn't completely sit against the hood. But I don't feel air coming through there while I'm driving. I am sure some does, but it's not enough to make a noticeable breeze or anything.

Overall, I am still very satisfied with the windshield. However, I do like the air flow when the weather is warm, so I've decided that in the spring, what I'll probably do is just remove the upper (main) portion of the windshield completely and leave it off until things start to get cold again in the fall. The way this two-piece model is designed. just taking off the upper section is as easy are taking out the four bolts holding the upper brackets on the roll cage bars and just lifting it off. I'll mark the edges of the brackets with a Sharpie before I remove it so I can easily line it back up in the perfect place for re-installation.

I made my own windshield and it folds down and lays on the hood.  You can go as fast as you want and the warm summer breeze flows right up and over, great for hot days!  Also easily flips up and held with 2 hand knobs.  You might consider looking at yours to see if it could be modified.  Many others have commented on how good of an idea this was.  Way back when I was looking for them I couldnt find one that stayed open at speed, so I made my own.  I like to view others mods that folks make....just gives us more ideas!
