Rider down on my scooter route
« on: May 07, 2017, 12:42:48 AM »
But fortunately he does not seem to be seriously injured.
On my way home this afternoon I came upon this downed big bike rider....pulled over and helped neighbors look after him until the squad & county Deputies arrived. Used some of my old Vietnam medic training ---check airway, keep him still, look him over for bleeders etc. etc., for several minutes. He seemed stunned but was oriented in the 3 spheres.

This 35 mph road is 1 mile from my house, and I travel it daily on my scooter.
He rounded a bend, traveled straight some 200 yards and hit a downed 3" thick dead tree branch which had fallen from overhanging tall trees.
Witnesses said he was seen tumbling down the pavement and into the roadside grass....while his bike slid quite a ways down the center of this lane until hitting a mailbox.

You can just see a portion of the wood which he hit and broke causing him to become unseated. (high-sided" he said)
(circled in red)

No helmet or gloves - but was wearing a heavy leather jacket, which now has scuffs but was not holed that I could see.

He's not smiling, but it could have been a lot worse.

Don't know much about big bikes, (an HD?) but seems in fair shape. Other side has the scrapes.

The branch came out of these tall trees. We have had a lot of wind for 3 days.

I had my small Panasonic in my pocket because I was on my way home from taking prom photos.
I asked him if I could take photos for my riding group.....he managed a chuckle.

Not a HD. Looks more like a Yamaha or a Suzuki. Good to hear that he was not badly injured.

Good thing no major injuries especially considering not wearing a helmet. Looks like a Japanese cruiser bike. I was just driving up a local mountain with a friend this morning when we just missed a basketball sized rock in the road and thinking that would not be fun to hit while riding one of my scooters.

Wow! Glad he seems to be ok. It could have been much worse. Every report of a cycle accident brings back memories of my ordeal. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. So I'm always glad to see someone able to either walk away or receive only relatively minor injuries.

Nice WX in the afternoon, pretty location, roadway hazards DO exist from many sources when we expect them least.
It's good that injuries were not worse.

You did good job stoping to help out. When ever I see someone in need I always try to stop if its just to ask if they are ok.
Its also good to see he was ok and siting up. great pictures. But I do wish he had a helmit on.

That is one of my major concerns, particularly when I commute in the dark. Good for you Stig for stopping to help the guy out. These days people seem to have no problem just driving by and staring. For what its worth, here is a link to an incident that happened here in Atlanta recently. Its a nightmare scenario for sure.

Next time, Stig, whip out that phone and take pictures instead of first responder! Just kidding! Done good AND you got pictures! We have self-pruning trees here, too and they have been busy pruning! Sticks, and whole branches as well as lotsa leaves. Have to be observant while riding in full gear.

So true. I think I mentioned that at least THREE people simply passed me by when I was sitting in the median with a mangled leg and still somewhat in a panic state. Even if they had not seen me, surely they saw the scooter that was laying down in the road with the LIGHT ON. in fact, they had to go around it. Thankfully, a couple did stop AFTER I crawled to my scooter, got my phone and called 911 . They were able to give the dispatcher a more clear headed description of my location.

In fact, I saw their address on the accident report. I need to send them a note to THANK them. This post reminded me to do so soon.
