Stig, considering there's really no substitute for displacement, smaller contenders must go to ratio changes to stay in the game.
Change in the variator, and clutch, will allow a higher rpm for a start, and more initial speed out of the gate, and, the dreaded hills.
All those minor considerations of power to weight ratio kinda go away with displacement. :-)
Double bonus if the configuration allows a closer ratio at full rpm for those glorious long, level straight-a-ways with a tailwind!
