Stalling out

Today my Xciting started stalling out at stops or near stops. I did do some high speed highway driving today and then came upon a traffic jam on the highway where it started the stalling. The Xciting is stalling often but always starts right up. It's not due for a tune up or check up for another 2500 miles. Any suggestions on what I should look at before I take to the shop?

..well take a look at your air filter first...

..it's the easiest to correct, and most likely cause of unexpected idle problems, on a scoot with no previous issues...

..could be that it needs cleaning, or replacing...

Go to Wal-Mart and pick up a bottle of Star-Tron fuel additiive in the marine section.  And a long tip funnel.  Give her a double dose.  If you're fuel filter is starting to clog up or have sediment or water in the gas, that should clear it out. Keep using it right on. 

Then if it's still stalling, check or replace the fuel filter.  Not sure if you can get to it underneath without taking off the side skirt on that side. (left)

Maybe adjust the idle? Mine idles around 2000 rpm. Also look into product called sea foam & add to gas. You may have gotten some bad gas?

try to check carburator vacuum piston comp.

...sea foam works...cleared the people 50 i bought right up...

..it hadn't even been started in over 2 years....

..also, seafoam is aiding in the resurrection of my agility 50...

First, simplest thang to try first: Ride with the gas cap open.

If that fixes it, it's vapor lock.

The X500 has a small vent on the edge of the cap. If it's clogged, spray some carb cleaner in it, and maybe run some thin wire (like a guitar string) through it.

With the heat being the way it's been locally, I must get a half-dozen calls like this every week at the shop. 90% of the time, opening/removing the fuel cap (whichever is appropriate, depending on yer scooter) resolves the problem. It works like magic, they say. Heh.

..i use a spray electrical contact cleaner to get th' gunk outta that vent...

..it dispells petroleates, has a nifty little straw and evaporates almost instantly into the atmosphere...

Yeah -- anything that'll bust up grime and evaporate will work. Shoot, just a guitar string will probably work. I had it happen to my P250 early in the season (first day it got to 87F); had it resolved as soon as I got to the shop, and borrowed the carb cleaner. *psssst!*

Well I have been riding the 500 around the city all week and have had no stall outs. I didn't do anything to it (some times life just doesn't allow time). So until it happens again I'll just chalk it up to Gremlins. But when time allows I need to get my hands dirty and learn my machine.

I'm in a different part of the country,but there has been a rash of water in are fuel at some big name station. Try the sea foam for the easy solve.
