Like 150i - First Oil Change Report

108 miles so far. 

Changed the oil this morning with Rotella 15w-40 (https://www.amazon.com/Shell-ROTELLA-Triple-Protection-Formerly/dp/B01LH7L0XA/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1531620456&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=rotella+15w40&dpPl=1&dpID=51Qo1dZkfIL&ref=plSrch) It took 0.95 quart as per the manual, dipstick showed half full after that change.  Factory oil was a dark black color.

Checked the oil screen, and the 17mm cap was pretty loose, almost hand tight. Some smallish particles in the screen, but not a huge amount. Will check again at next oil change at 600 or so miles (per factory maintenance schedule). 

Plan is to use the non-sythentic for a couple thousand (or until the gallon I bought is finished) and then switch to sythentic.

Also changed the gear oil to some Lucas 80w-90, 0.19 quarts.  No issues to report with that either.  Factory oil was a greenish color.
 Went on a ~50 mile ride after in 92F heat and the bike didn't miss a beat.

Just a really awesome bike for the price, rides great and zero issues to report.  Really stable at speed, 45-50mph is easy to ride (have not been faster yet, but it will definitely go faster!!!). Lots of power on this thing.

Manual says to do the first one at 600 miles, but is there a benefit to doing it early at 100?  Just worries cause my last scooter had so many issues with the engine and they were pretty sure it was from improper break in (cylinder scoring was their guess). I bought it with used with 125 miles on it and they had it 2 years, don’t ask me how you only put 125 miles on a scooter in two years, had my Like 150 for a week and I already have that many.  But they did have a dealer do the oil at 100 miles (even though the manual said 500 on that one as well). But suppose something could’ve been defective on my last one from the start.

I am sure there is probably no right answer, but I always kind of assumed that new oil is good and metal shavings and unknown oil could be bad. So I decided to do an initial change. I am sure this is like religion though and everyone has their own answer.

My two cents?  Oil is cheap.  Changed it at 100 miles, again at 300, 600, then 1000 before I figure break in is complete.  Perhaps that's a bit obsessive, but we're talking a grand total of maybe $20 worth of oil for my peace of mind.

Yep, many of us are worried about our new engine and want to put known/good quality lubricants in it.
I start all my smaller scooters with scooter specific 4-stroke AMSOIL......always within the first 100 miles.


Is that really necessary ? I bet you it is NOT!
It just makes some of us feel better. (just because it is from Asia doesn't mean they're using fish squeezings in there!)

Good oil and following the manual's instructions for the break-in period are important steps to me. Others say that is BS....and they'll tell you they have proof to back it up.

I figure the folks who built the scooter know more than web writers -- or me.

Right on.  Just curious.  I will probably just go by the book then.  Question is though, do I take it in to the dealer, cause I totally will pay the $100 if they actually check the valves (and not just say they did) and everything or do I just spend $10 on a quart of motul and do the oil change myself, pretty sure I still have some Lucas gear oil laying around from my last scoot (and a few quarts of Eni I ride synthetic that I have to wait to use until 1500 miles or so).  I feel like that first service is important to get documented for warranty (yes am full aware of the magnuson moss warranty act and will be doing all the rest of the service from then out, but do they really check valve clearance and all the other torque specs, or just do a quick lube and get you out). Cause they are always so booked,
Almost willing to bet they go the quick lube route or do the valves even typically even need adjustment on first service?
