100° Heat Index & Black helmets

Was admiring the beautiful black and silver Honda Gold Wing at a stop light today.
Rolled down my window and, yep....." I smell pot roast, don't you Honey?"
Light changed before I could tell him he needs more garlic in that black helmet.

Black helmets....well they hide the bug splatters.
And that color does Nothing else for a rider....but like Forbes said, at least he was wearing a helmet.

I have a black 1/2 helmet that is hotter than my FX41 when it reaches 100ºF.
I purchased the 1/2 shell without vents thinking it would be cool.
I've since bought another pilot/jet helmet that has huge vents on top. It feels great.

I would NEVER buy a black helmet unless maybe if I was planning to ride in Antarctica.  Why make it even harder for drivers to see you?

I do understand the HiViz concept. Unfortunately, the majority of motorcycle accidents happen by drivers pulling out in front of the bike with the headlight shining right at 'em.
Some use the pulsing headlights. Sometimes people just don't see ya regardless (even if they are big as a truck...ahem....)

Some use the pulsing headlights. Sometimes people just don't see ya regardless (even if they are big as a truck...ahem....)

I've read time and again that the #1 visible item of a rider is not the headlight - but the helmet.

Well, they do one thing well. They protect the noggin in an accident. Lol. When my first Helmet bit the dust because it wouldn’t latch, the only one they had that seemed to be decent quality and in my price range was a black one. I hated it because it was invisible at night. And yes, it was HOTTTTT. But it did its job. If I ride again. I’ll certainly get a light colored one that’s cool and visible. School bus yellow? [emoji23]

I've had black and white versions of the same helmet (HJC IS Max) a few years back.
The differences weren't as bad when moving when moving since both had good air flow, but they were there.
When stopped it was pretty noticeable.  I live in a pretty mild climate so it wasn't a huge deal unless I headed out east of the mountains.
I'd imagine it's more of an issue in the rest of the country where temps get more extreme during the summer.
The black one eventually died nobly when I laid down my NT.  All of my current helmets are white.

Ha Ha Ha...    Yes you are right.  I can laugh at myself.  Lets face it, nothing is 100% effective but I prefer to at least try to influence the odds in my favor. 

Then again, maybe if that Tow truck driver had been wearing a Hi Vis Helmet.........

My favorite story in this book is:
The fellow who was crashed into while wearing a lot of white.
He took the large $$ from the auto owner's ins. co. and, after his lengthy medical recovery, bought a 560lb flat black chain driven scooter and.....matching flat black helmet to compliment his bike color choice.

That was me wearing the yellow helmet.  Whenever I'm on  group ride I notice that yellow helmets really stand out.  White may be better at night but during the day yellow seems to stand out the most.

I'm actually thinking about getting some of that flourescent yellow 3M Engineer-Grade reflective tape, and putting a few stripes on my helmet. That way, it will still look high-vis in the day, but will also be reflective at night.

Either that, or I'll put a few bits of electroluminescent wire on the thing, and then my helmet will be lit up too...

I keep saying I'm going to do this, but I keep procrastinating too.

By the way, I actually used Velcro to attach one of those flashing red lights that people attach to their bicycles to the back of my helmet, so I could be seen at night. It wasn’t a bright light . But it improved visibility quite a bit.
