"5 Year old tires"

Many advise that a motorcycle or scooter tire should be replaced after 5 years of use. (clock starts when tire is installed on the bike)
Some also advise that tires should be replaced after 5 years of age. (clock starts when tire comes from the mold)

Michelin suggests that motorcycle/scooter tires be replaced after 10 years of use.
Michelin says tires in use for 5 years should be inspected yearly by a professional.
Michelin says damaged, plugged, worn to wear limits tires should be replaced.


Members - Surely many riders have pushed their tires past these conditions - so, please post your experience of the motorcycle/scooter tire failing on the road while in use - which was NOT due to a puncture. Personally, I am aware of off-road cyclists experiencing tire failures - but I have never heard of a street bike doing the same. So, your story will be of interest.

I myself have actually rode my motorcycle to the point of being bald and that same tire had a plug patch in it.   It wasn’t the smartest thing to do and I’ve never done it again.  Being bald that is.   I can live with the plug patch cause they work. 

A buddy of mine who purchased his first bike stated to me that his bike didn’t seem to be smooth riding anymore.  He was green when it came to motorcycles so I looked at his bike.   

Tires were beyond bald that the threads were showing.   OMG!   
New tires were put on and problem solved.   Lol.   Now he knows how to maintain his bike besides the obvious.

The only road failure since 1960 was a new Shinko with a tube on a Buddy 150. This was the replacement for a wornout rear tire(tubeless). No other brand failed on three motorcycles and eight scooters for any reason.

What I've read was that after 5 in inspect the tires thoroughly and keep a closer eye on them.
I've ridden 10 year old tires that were perfect, & replaced newer tires.
Really a lot depends on how the tire's stored.
When I bought the k7 Burgman 650 it had a set of Michelin's that had tread.
The front was 8 years old, the rear was only 4, both looked OK when I bought the bike but both were visibly crumbling after about 1k miles, the front more so than the back.
I've seen this on desert state vehicles a few times.   Not sure of the provenance of the bike, but I replaced both in short order.  Tires are cheaper than faces.

Ride a lot and long distance and you do not end up with 5 year old tire.

Since 1990, scooters rubber band drive type---had Helix (Fusion Japan market) one Bridgestone rear come apart after long wideopen, hot run on Freeway, Reflex several failures in US (Bridgestone paid for replacements)

Tires important to me.  I do own tire work/us "Ride On" as balance aide. over 400,000 miles on modern maxi scooters----never had tire failure underway with old/2 stroke Vespas.....and they had a spare!!

I have also never had a tyre fail on the road, in what is probably 100K easily.

Only Avon Vyper Strykes have ever caused me any hassle, by wearing in a bizarre, uneven way.

My agility 50 tire was still stock when I bought it (it was a 2012 or 2013, I got it in april 2017). And worn a little bit, I just drove it, drove over some glass, plugged it and refilled it, and kept driving it until I sold it.
I got it ridiculously cheap (the owner couldn’t figure out what was wrong, carb needed cleaning and it needed a ever so slightly higher idle speed) and didn’t plan on having it forever, so a ~80$ tire wasn’t really worth it, unless something went wrong.
Ended up selling it for quite a bit more than I bought it for.
