2018 Kymco Super 8 50x 4 stroke
« on: May 13, 2019, 08:16:54 PM »
First, I can't find much info at all on my scooter... like drive belt size, CDI info, etc. It's funny, the manual tells the valve clearance but not the belt size?!? (Yes, I know I can take the cover off and look, but I'm fat and getting old, so I want to go in there only ONCE to change the belt and rollers!)

But, the real issue is now it's broken down. Riding home the other day, it just lost power. Felt like I hit the brakes hard when it happened, but I didn't. It continued to run, but very little power. When I finally stopped, it idled down and cut off. Now it won't crank.

It turns over, but doesn't "fire." I replaced the spark plug and looked for spark, it has spark. Took the fuel line loose after the filter, pressed the starter button, and fuel flowed. Took the air intake loose going into the carb and sprayed starter fluid. Nothing.

I'm thinking maybe fuel isn't getting through the carb, so I ordered a cheap one off Amazon. Should be here Wednesday.

Any thoughts, y'all?

This 2018 scooter has a fully transferable 2 year warranty.
Not understanding why you are buying a non-OEM amazon carb?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

A new carb is quick and cheap. The dealer is 30 miles away, plus I'd have to miss work and find someone to take it. I don't have many options.

As far as troubleshoot, it has spark, gas is getting to the carb, it's getting air, so??

Before buying cheap carbs off Amazon, read the reviews carefully.  For example:"First thing I noticed was that it poured fuel out from the bowl as soon as I got this installed. I attempted to remove the bowl from the carb but the screws immediately stripped due to how they were installed in the factory (fastened way to tightly). Once I finally removed the bowl I found that there was a crack along the bottom of the bowl where the drain screw was fastened that screw was also fastened way too tightly which led to the crack. Overall this part was useful only for the spare parts I got from it to rebuild my original carburetor. Cheap materials and poor build quality."  Buyer beware!

If fuel wasn't getting to the carb, it would fire with starter fluid, which it's not. Check the compression. A valve adjustment might bring that back up. Otherwise, it's probably the rings.
If you don't have a compression tester, which is available pretty cheaply on Amazon, try turning it over with the plug in it by pushing down on the kickstart lever with your hand. If it turns relatively easy, you don't have compression. Another test is to remove the spark plug hole and block the hole with your thumb or finger, then turn it over with the electric starter. If you can keep your finger or thumb on the hole, it probably doesn't have compression.
