anybody doing any scooter 'labor' this weekend?
« on: September 06, 2020, 10:14:35 PM »
I thought I'd get a little deferred maintenance completed this weekend. The scooter's windscreen has been juddering a bit on acceleration and I've gone in there before and made sure all 3 nuts were tight that hold the headlight cover tight (the windscreen is bolted to the headlight cover).

Since it such a royal PITA to separate the headlight cover (Stig?..Like 200I?) I thought I'd also change the brake fluid, since it's been almost 2 years....and then while I'm in there I may as well lube the lever pivot points...and since I've never lubed the rear brake cable I thought I'd tackle that one, too.

The front headlight cover attaches to the handlebar at 3 points. I plan on adding lockwashers and blue locktight to the nuts that secure them. Not sure if anyone else has their windscreen judder back and forth on acceleration? I had this problem very bad a few years ago and found one of the 3 attachment nuts had come loose and disappeared.

After replacing the brake fluid I figured I'd do the same for the rear brake on my motorcycle, since that has also been 24 months since it's been done. That way I could use up most of my brake fluid bottle and dispose of the rest.

I had the most trouble lubing the brake cable. The metal fitting doesn't fit well into my motion pro cable luber tool...so i got lube everywhere but down the cable. I also tried the 'cut the corner off a baggie and rubber band it to the cable'  method but that also got lube all over. I resorted to just spraying tiny bursts into the cable and pulling the cable in and out to try to get it to go down the cable. I'll let it sit over night and spray some more tomorrow.

I added a few pics. Hope you all are enjoying the long weekend (those of you in the US).

Hey, nice job!
And thanks for the pics.
Worst part of splitting the headset for servicing the reservoirs....is getting my mirrors to stay put afterwards.
Using thread lock, etc, they still want to move while riding for several days. You get tight, and then a little more and you're buying the whole assembly again because the mount is stripped.
Again, good job on the photos.
I did check both dipsticks ....but I do that every ride.
Once I  found I'd walked away with only half the oil added after an oil change. Glad I checked the stick the next ride. Family emergency had called me away...

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

one more pic...the 3 threaded attachment points on the headlight cover. They attach through holes in 3 metal tabs welded to the handlebar and are held in place with 3 nuts. The other half of the cover (the part with the instruments, facing the rider) attaches to the headlight cover with 4 screws and then both front and back covers also attach to metal tabs on the right and left side...kind of like Frankenstein's neck bolts!

So 4 screws and 2 bolts to separate the 2 covers and 3 more nuts to remove the headlight cover from the bike.

Stig - luckily my mirrors aren't touched during this process. They attach to threaded mounts by each grip.

Still squirting more cable lube into the brake cable...haven't seen any come out the other end...yet.

To follow up...just went out to the garage to grab a beer and there is finally a spot of lube at the rear of the brake cable on the cardboard I placed under there. That means the lube worked its way all through the cable. All is well with the world, again.
