Oil From Side of Crankcase
« on: October 28, 2019, 05:42:06 PM »
I will be adjusting the valves on my Kymco B&W 250 so I took the right sidecover off the engine so I can rotate the piston, and a little bit of oil leaked from the side. Is that normal or is there some seal problem? TIA

I'm pretty sure that right side cover should have oil in it. Normally one would turn the motor over from the drive, left side, when adjusting valves.

On the downtown 300 there is a cap screwed into the side of the motor,  right over the nut  that turns the crank./  on my piaggio I had to turn the variator nut to turn the motor, to get to TDC.,

I pulled up a parts list. Unlike some bikes this bike has no access to the flywheel bolt on the right side. That pretty much leaves the variator side to turn the crank. BTW, you do not need to be exactly on TDC to set the valves, anywhere close is good. BUT, you do have to be on the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke. If you have the valve cover off, which you would to check valves, it's pretty easy to tell which stroke the motor is on. If correct, both rockers arms will have a small amount of play to them.

Remove valve covers & spark plug. Ground the spark plug. Use the electric starter to bump the motor over while watching the valves open and close. I usually stick a pencil in the plug hole to gauge when the piston is close to TDC. Don’t depress the start button continuously, just tap, tap, tap.
