What brand variator do you recomend?
« on: February 17, 2020, 07:49:56 PM »
I purchased a Kymco project scooter a 2007 people 250S . The variator and bell came loose and the whole assembly needs replaced along with the drive belt. The people that owned the scooter parked it the garage 4.5 years ago when this happened.  Otherwise the scooter is in decent shape. What brand do recommend for replacement of the belt and variator assembly?

I noticed malossi had a racing clutch and bell kit that looked more like a centrifugal clutch.   The first thing I purchased for the 250S was a kymco shop manual. Trying to learn more about the different clutches.

I think when the people took it in to the Scooter Shop they didn't tighten the nut sufficiently when they changed the belt and it came loose.

Thought I would add the main riding that will be done is cruising county roads around 55 mph.

Stock Kymco CVT parts (clutch, bell, belt, etc., etc.) are of very good quality.

There are lots of go-fast (-er) parts out there. Some of them even equal Kymco for quality and FIT.
So, I recommend Kymco.
You have so many Kymco scooters - so, this response probably is not what you're looking for.

Actually it is, there are so many options I wanted to check here first.  This is new ground for me working on scooters. Others have more experience than I.  I get bored in the cold weather so I thought I would take on a project.

Well today I went in for a exploratory on the People 250S and it wasn't good. When the variator came apart it took out the splines on the shaft. This means I will have to replace the crankshaft.  This would entail taking the motor out and splitting the case. Silly me thinking I could get by with a variator  and a belt. Another option would be to find a motor out of a wrecked scooter. I belive the Bet&Win, Grandvista and the People 250S all use the same 250 motor.

So if you know someone with a 250 motor  or a wrecked 250cc scooter from the same vintage send me a message.

That's a bummer.
(and a reminder to us all to torque CVT nuts properly ...I use a new nut each time)
Good luck in your search.
Are you in a scootering area?

(I'm I in a scootering area) Only if I want to ride with the Lama riders.  There is a local Cushman  scooter club. You see a few scooter riders in the area but not many and mostly the 50cc scooters so they don't need a motorcycle license.  My People 250S should have been called a Bet&Win only I bet and lost. I didn't give much money for it last Saturday so no harm.  It still might be a good winter project for next year since spring is less then 30 days away. I went down to my local Kymco dealer (Dan's Cycle ) and they priced out the new parts. The crankshaft was $199. Variator assembly was around $150 each item priced individually.      I'm  lucky in the fact I only live about 19 miles from a Kymco dealer. I'm also friends with him and his wife.

I belive the Scooter dealer in KC did not tighten the nut properly when they changed the belt and this was the result.  I also found the gear vent plug hand tight they only tightened the bottom plug so it leaked oil onto the rear wheel. Still plenty of gear  oil when I changed it. The engine oil didn't look bad with no evidence of metal contamination when I changed it.

The people who owned it were not mechanical inclined and depended on the Scooter dealer in KC for all the maintenance.

When the variator went bad they parked it in the garage 4.5 years ago.

I would use only Kymco parts----speaking from over 400,000 miles of maxi scooter use.
