New Belt Measurement
« on: March 26, 2020, 03:15:45 AM »
What am I doing wrong?? This is a brand new Malossi belt just received today. Belt code 6115277. It's meant to be 25.2mm wide, but I'm measuring it at 23.6mm??? I measure exactly 14.7 height which is correct. I haven't measured the length yet.

I don't measure drive belts---just use OEM belts and change at makers recommended miles  ----safer/better that way.

Yeah, I'm just wondering if the belt even needed changing now. I purchased the bike with 13,000km on the clock and it's now got 20,000. I have no idea if the current belt was original or not. So I check the belt on the bike and it measured 23.5mm which was below the service limit so I went and ordered this new one. But it arrives today and I measure it out of interest and it's 23.6mm. The thing is the manufactures specs are 25.2mm. That's the same for the OEM and this Molassi belt. I just wondered if I was measuring it incorrectly or something.

Sounds like they sold you the wrong size belt.
That is a common issue with after-market belts. Many Kymco owners will only use a Kymco belt at replacement time.
They are high quality, last a long time, and  F I T.
True, you usually don't need to measure your new belt if you purchased a Kymco belt.

I want the new belt to sit all the way at the bottom of the variator and be at the top of the clutch pulley when I install it. Then I start the engine, twist the throttle, and see if the belt rises to the top of the variator and drops to the bottom of the clutch pulley, with no flopping up and down of the belt. That's my test for a new belt. If it's worn, width wise, or too narrow, it will not rise to the top of the variator and it needs replacing. You probably will notice loss of top speed, too.

I haven't fitted the belt yet. Waiting to hear back from Malossi why it's so much thinner than the specs. I'll let you know what they say, and then if I do fit it, how the bike performs.

In the meantime, I did go ahead and fit some Dr Pully sliders (15grams) that I ordered along with the belt. I have to say I'm massively impressed with the result. I haven't been able to get out on the open road yet, due to the entire country being in virus lockdown, but I can ride around the local roads and the bike is so much smoother now, especially in the low revs. I used to get a nasty vibration / shudder from the transmission in the low revs when taking off, or even driving slowly. It would happen around 3,500 -4,500 rpm, and it made riding the bike in that range quite unpleasant. Now it's buttery smooth from the moment the clutch starts to engage all the way up the rev range. I'm shocked at how good the bike feels now. It's like night and day. I just want to keep riding and riding. To be fair, I can't say 100% it's the sliders that fixed the issues. It may have been the variator was sticky, due to build up of belt dust ect as I give it a really good clean before putting it all back together. During disassembly, once I had the variator off, I couldn't simply lift the sliding back plate out of the variator. It was stuck in there tight. I had to flip it over and tap with a steel rod and hammer down through the center hole to fee up the back plate. After a good clean and putting the sliders in it was moving feely.

Perhaps you are running at higher engine RPMs at those road speeds. Which will likely reduce your top speed some.
