Heated Grips on Kymco AK500i ABS
« on: March 30, 2020, 12:10:45 PM »
Hi all,

I recently bought a 2017 AK550, but after reinstalling the battery the heated grips wont turn on.
I did happen to find an image of the relay operating the grips, and I did manage to check the fuses in the fusebox located on the Battery. (I attached an image of the Heated grips relay item no. 3650A
All Fuses are fine. The scooter operates in a normal matter everything works. Noodoe, ABS, all the dials and no error messages on the dashboard.

I have 2 question
1 Does anyone knwo where the Heated grip relay is located (in the nose)
2 Is there a way to test if the relay is defective (or should I investigate further some other issue which may be the cause of the grips not turning on)

In sometimes when you press the Heated grip button for approx 3 seconds the heated grip sign in the dashboard illuminates but only for 0,5 seconds.

Thanks a lot for your feedback!
Regards,
Bart

You are the only one who has one of these models so YOU are the expert! Har, har!

That parts picture of the relay and wires, what is that device on the left wire from the relay? Looks like either a bullet connector or a fuse holder to me.
Then, are the wires from that relay sealed into the relay box?
There is a reliable way to test that relay IF it is known which wires do what.

Thank you Karl for your reply and for making me the Expert :-)
I guess there is nothing left for me than open her up again and start looking for the device.
I think I have an Idea where it is located, but at first I did not know where I was looking for, so I will give it a go.

A service manual generally gives some indication where components are located. I suspect what you seek will be up front below the windscreen. Yep, open 'er up!

Do you get the red light on the left hand handlebar?

Well, when it used to work, the light on the left handlebar actually turned white (never seen it any other color)
But that won't come on either.

I have to hold my button in for a longer time-maybe 7 seconds.
When I had a service the heated grips didn't work for the first few rides. I was told this is normal and sure enough  it started working as normal after it was cycled on and off a few more times.
Do you know what other component is on the same circuit? Maybe that would give you a clue as to whether there is a break somewhere?

I am as intrigued as you, keep us informed.
