Looks like an interesting day.
Have fun Karl!
Karl, do they still have that M.A.R.S. system - the one in which the military in Vietnam could talk free to people in the States for 5 mins? You had to say, "over" when done talking, etc. (I never used it - too much a distraction - saw many guys who looked gut-shot after speaking to loved ones)
Towards the end of my tour when I was attached to the 71st Evac in Pleiku - and now how a secure personal space - I purchased a Zenith Transoceanic Radio. That baby took a few lbs of D batteries. Strung my antenna high as I could get it. Hoping to get an American voice, maybe some music, from HI or 'Frisco?! Heard some Australians a couple of times. Never really sussed the big instruction book and the all the dials
(Let it go for $50 during the FUBAR with a commander, "You're getting a drop, Doc!" I get orders and a flight to Danang and DEROS 'home!' - "You're not going anywhere troop! - go back to the 71st." No one claimed me so I ghosted around Vietnam with no 'orders' at all for several days. I was too pissed to worry about it. Hitching rides on trucks, huey's, a Graves Registration C-130 etc. Helped sort Xmas packages at midnight with 5 'brothers' and their soul music during a squall in a hangar in Phu Bai - good guys and good coffee! They flagged the ride on the Graves plane for me. Back in Danang sat with a nice 700 yr old USO lady opening a box of Xmas cards to GI's from a 3rd grade class in Wyoming, drinking horrible coffee and eating stale donuts. Only combat missions were flying on Xmas day. So I sat.)
